Joining the War The Allies in Europe were getting desperate while The United States was getting prepped for war. German submarines sank 844 Allied vessels. Germany was expected to win the war unless America helped with their supplies and army. Allied naval leaders came up with a convoy system. US chose John J. Pershing to command the American Expeditionary Force. America proved their commitment to the fight by its intention to send more troops.

Setbacks and Advantages https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct The British took a 3 month trip, dragging through the mud to Belgium. Meanwhile Austria-Hungary and Germany won against the Italians at Caporetto. Russia was getting tired and 2 million abandoned the front line. Russia was under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. He intended to set Russia on the road to communism. Lenin also wanted to pull Russia completely out of the war. Called the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The peace allowed the German army to shift 40 divisions to the Western front.

March 1918 Germany attacks. “peace offensive” Pershing traveled to the French headquarters to pledge America to fight under French command. Pershing offered infantry, artillery, aviation, etc. and to use whenever needed. Germany advanced through lines in Belgium and France and reached the city of Chateau-Thierry by June. 1 million Parisians fled knowing the Germans were coming. American and French troops counterattacks Chateau-Thierry and evicted German troops from Belleau Wood. The Germans set up barbed wire, artillery, and machine guns.

Continued pt.2.... Three weeks of intense fighting before driving the Germans out. U.S. marines suffered a large amount of casualties in their first battle of war. Mid July Germany attempted a new drive to Paris. With more than a quarter of a million Americans involved the allies counterattacked again. Second battle of the Marne. Allies blockaded the German army and Germany started to losing the will to fight. In 1918, the Allies stretched along the North Sea to Verdun. American soldiers advanced on heavily German covered ground between the Meuse River and Argonne Forest in Northeastern France. In November German defences started to weaken and Allies advanced.

The Armistice Germany’s military and political leaders realized that their cause was lost. Their army had no reserves. The Americans had assured the Allies of a fresh supply of soldiers. Germany knew that France and Britain wanted to impose a harsh settlement, instead President Wilson recently put forward on the “Fourteen Points” international cooperation for principles. Wilson received a note from the German government requesting an armistice based on the fourteen points, but Wilson had little say. Germany had to cancel the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and hand over its entire fleet of U-boats. Germany became a republic.

Wars Deadly Toll November 11 at 11 A.M. the armistice took effect. Approximately 10 million military people lost their life. Many of millions soldiers were blinded, lost limbs, suffered lung damage from all of the poisonous gases, or experienced mind and behavior problems. Millions of kids were left orphaned or homeless. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/294422894366022263/
