Christianity

A New Religion During the 1st century ( 1- 99 A.D.) a new religion appears. Christianity based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Christianity was rooted in the ideas and traditions of Judaism, but developed as a separate faith. At this time Jesus was born around the end of the first century.

A Prophecy According to prophecy, the Jew’s new leader would restore the ancient kingdom of Israel. The Prophets called this leader the Messiah, which means “God’s appointed one” In other words, the Jews believed that God would choose the Messiah that would lead them. Many Jews believed this Messiah would appear soon.

Jesus of Nazareth Jesus was believed to be the Jewish Messiah. Little is known about him. What we do know comes from the bible. Which is the holy book of the Christians. The bible is made up of 2 parts. Old Testament = History & ideas of Jesus New Testament = Life & teachings of Jesus.

Jesus of Nazareth Born in Bethlehem His birth marks the shift between B.C. & A.D. Started as a carpenter then at 30 he traveled to spread his teachings. Very little is known about his life before he travel and taught

The Disciples Jesus gathered a small group of followers known as Disciples. Jesus chose 12 of these disciples to help him preach. They are known as the 12 Apostles. After the death of Jesus, some of his disciples traveled widely to spread his teachings. The Apostles Peter, Paul, and others, spread Jesus’s teachings throughout the Mediterranean Region.

Teachings of Jesus Jesus taught to love god and one and another. Take care of the sick & poor Live a good life & you will go to the kingdom of god The people who loved money & goods more than god would not be saved.

The Effect of Jesus He attracted many followers but his teachings challenged the authority of political and religious figures. He was arrested and executed around 30 AD. The Greek word for Messiah is Christos From this word Christian & Christianity developed Within 100 years after his death 1000’s of Christians lived in the Roman empire, though many were persecuted. Today, Christianity is the most practiced religion with over 2 Billion follower.
