NAMING ACIDS Acids are substances which give H+ ions when put in water. If you see a compound that starts with an H, chances are it is an acid. Two common exceptions are H2O and H2O2.

RULES FOR NAMING ACIDS If the suffix of the anion is “-ide”, the acid compound starts with “hydro-“ and ends with “-ic”. Example: HBr ion is bromide hydrobromic acid

Comes from carbonate, CO3-2 WRITING ACID FORMULAS Look at the end of the acid name. If the acid ends in “-ic” and does not start with “hydro-”, then the anion ends in “-ate”. Example: Carbonic acid Comes from carbonate, CO3-2 H+ and CO3-2 becomes H2CO3
