Major Battles of the Civil War 1861-1865

The Atlanta Campaign Summer of 1864 William Sherman pushes confederate forces form the Georgia-Tennessee border to Atlanta Confederates burn Atlanta as they abandon it Atlanta is captured and the success helps propel Lincoln to victory in the election of 1864. It was a crushing defeat for the morale of the South.

Grant’s Virginia Campaign After Savannah, Sherman moved into the Carolinas to meet up with Grant’s Army of the Potomac in Virginia Grant pursued Lee’s army through the summer and fall of 1864 in Virginia moving closer to Richmond. He promised Lincoln that whatever happened he would not retreat. In June of 1864 Grant, unable to break Confederate defenses began a siege just south of Richmond at Petersburg
