IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT How have major technological innovations modified the physical environment? WG.19.A evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy that have been used to modify the physical environment READINESS STANDARD YSLETA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTIONAL TEAM

Which words are you familiar with, and which do you not yet know? Transportation Innovation Physical Environment Technology Modify Commerce Lifestyle Impact Energy

TRANSPORTATION and ENERGY http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/standards/14/index.html TRANSPORTATION: Europe’s high speed railways travel at 186 mph between major cities. How did building it modify the environment? ENERGY: Holland’s turbo windmills harness natural wind energy to power communities. How did building it modify the environment? How did these innovations modify their environments? What can people do now that they couldn’t do before?

What difference do you see in the transportation technology What difference do you see in the transportation technology? What’s the difference in the energy it took to make? http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/big-idea/02/queens-genes

How is this technological innovation good for humans?

How is this technological innovation bad for the environment?

How has this environment been modified?

How have technological innovations modified the physical environment?

What’s the difference in technology? Why? Watering hole in Ethiopia. Palestinian girl filling a jug from a U.N. water relief tower. How does location affect available technology?

TRANSPORTATION Because of Europe’s High speed railway, the environment has been modified. What is possible because of it?

ENERGY The Three Gorges Dam in China is the world largest hydroelectric power station. However, of the 3,000 to 4,000 remaining critically endangered Siberian Crane, a large number currently spend the winter in wetlands that will be destroyed by the Three Gorges Dam. The dam contributed to the functional extinction of the Baiji Yangtze river dolphin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Gorges_Dam

Let’s see what we know… Which are you ready to answer, and which do you need a peek? Which of the following is TRUE about innovations that have modified the environment? A They usually cause problems for the poorer nations. B They often have both positive and negative effects. C They mostly have been beneficial in energy production. D The modifications rarely have helped most citizens. The impact of recent major technological innovations on Africa's rural lifestyles could be described as: F extensive G minimal H important J pronounced

Talk to each other, and then talk to me… WG.19.A evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy that have been used to modify the physical environment How have major technological innovations been used to modify the physical environment? Use the word wall words to answer.
