Law – Equal for All? What does it mean to live in a “just” society? The idea of law has always been associated with the idea of justice! The law is supposed to be equal for all, ensuring equity in all situations may be unjust! Consider the following example: Break and Enter – to get rope to save a drowning friend – should that person be given the same punishment as the person who breaks in to steal the televison? So should the law take the circumstances into consideration?
Equal Treatment under the Law Treat like cases alike and different cases differently. What does this statement mean? All Canadians are supposed to be treated equally under the law.
