Unit 7: National Media- Sky Ethan Mclaughlin

Overview Sky UK limited is telecommunications company in the UK founded in 1990, is provides TV, broadband and telephone services

Sector Sky is apart of the Televison sector, with its various channels including Sky Atlantic, Sky living sky movies, sky sports and sky news reaching over 11 million customers as of 2015

Structure and Ownership Sky is a privately owned company. They are a subscription-based service and they offer customizable packages of particular types of programmes such as movie packages, sport packages etc.

Sources of income Sky would make their money from peoples subscriptions on top of the base bundle, which is £22 a month, for example: Sky sports- £27.50 extra a month Sky Cinema- £18 extra a month Multiscreen- £12 extra a month

Product diversity While Sky doesn't really have a large diversity in their products, they only really offer TV shows, but the TV programmes they do offer are very diverse. They have dramas like “Game of Thrones” and “Mad Dogs”, Comedy shows like “Modern Family” and “The Simpsons” Documentaries like “Ross Kemp on Gangs” and that’s just on the main channel, Sky 1. On movie channels they show films of all genres like action, horror, sc-fi etc. They also show lots of different sports across the various Sky Sports Channels

Profitability of product range I think that Sky’s product range would be very profitable, because with their large range of television and film channels, they can attract a lot of customers and depending on what they interests are, they will subscribe to a particular packages In 2015 Sky’s total revenue was just under 10 billion pounds

Competitors Sky’s main competitors would be the other biggest national broadcasters, BBC, ITV and Channel 4 Personally I would have more interest in Sky than in the BBC, ITV or Channel Four because it has the better shows in my opinion

Rating as a career choice I would like to work with Sky or any of the programmes that Sky broadcast, especially a show like Game of Thrones
