Some Quick Unit Terms Drug: is a chemical substance that is taken to cause changes in a persons body or behavior. (1) Alcohol acts as a depressant, and a Depressant: is a drug that slows down the brain and body reactions.(10) Stimulant: is a drug that speeds up activities of the central nervous system. Sometimes used to treat ADHD.(11)
Drug (cont.) Terms Prescription Drug: Is a drug that can be obtained only with a written order from a doctor and usually purchased at Pharmacy. Illegal Drug: is a chemical substance that people of any age may not lawfully manufacture, possess, but, or sell. These are also referred as “Street drugs.”
Additional Terms Drug Abuse: Using the drug intentionally and unsafely. Psychoactive Drug: "mood altering” drugs that affects brain activity, and abuse of these lead to addiction. Hallucinogen: a drug that distorts perception. Addiction: The state of losing control over the use of a drug and is accompanied by a strong craving.
Reactions of Drugs… Drug Antagonism: occurs when each drugs effect is canceled out or reduced by the other. Ex: if you smoke nicotine causes blood pressure to rise and one cancel out the benefits of blood pressure medication. Drug Synergism: occurs when drugs interact with each other and produce greater effects, than taken alone.
Drug & Alcohol Poster Create an informative poster to share out in class. You have to Define the drug, its physical affects, brain affects, emotional affects, and the “big picture” affects. It needs to be neat, and can have one “clip art” type of image. Nothing promoting the usage of this drug.
