Les Verbes Réfléchis What you do to yourself
L’objectif: SWBAT state what they do do on a daily basis. SWBAT conjugate reflexive verbs in the present tense.
Review: Let’s first review our er verb endings: Je . . . e Tu . . . es Il/elle . . . e Nous . . . ons Vous . . . ez Ils/ elles . . . ent
So we know that when we describe what we like/ love, we say Je aime Tu aimes Il aime nous aimons vous aimez ils aiment
We are going to use these endings today to conjugate reflexives
What is a reflexive? A reflexive verb is a verb that has a « se » in front of it. « se » - « yourself » There are two kinds of reflexive verbs: Ones that cannot exist without a « se » Verbs that you can make reflexive
Example: One example of verbs that cannot exist without a se in front: s’amuser - to have fun
You can make any verb reflexive by placing a se in front of it. You can only do it if it makes sense (or if the verb can’t exist without a « se ») parler- to speak se parler - to speak to yourself manger- to eat se manger? to eat yourself??? Doesn’t make sense
We can make any verb reflexive if it makes sense there are some verbs that just are reflexive (we know some, we’ll get to some more later)
What do I do with the « se »? We are going to try to conjugate the verb s’habiller First, forget the « se » is there, put on your er verb endings Je habille Nous habillons tu habilles Vous habillez il habille Ils habillent
Now that we have this, let’s add in our « se » for Je, « se » becomes « me » Je me habille for Tu, « se » becomes « te » Tu te habilles for il/ elle, se stays the same il se habille
The rest for nous, se becomes nous Nous nous habillons for vous, se becomes vous vous vous habillez for ils/elles, se becomes se Ils se habillent
Let’s look at Se Regarder. First step, conjugate like an er verb. Je regarde Tu regardes il regarde nous regardons vous regardez ils regardent
Now, let’s add in our reflexive Je me regarde nous nous regardons Tu te regardes vous vous regardez il se regarde ils se regardent elle se regarde elles se regardent
Here’s where we make mistakes: EVERYONE FORGETS THE ENDING je me habiller - DOES NOT MAKE SENSE If you change your verb ending first, you avoid this problem.
