Presentation transcript:

Hitler Rearms and Expands How the League of Nations Failed and thus led to WWII

Appease and Attack Campaign Started with signing a 10 year peace treaty with Poland in 1934 What does it mean to appease? Then Hitler visits Mussolini for the first time

Hitler then Annexes Austria Forces the Austrian president to sign the country over to him without even firing a shot This upset Mussolini for a while because he was supposed to protest Austria With the Annexation of Austria in place, Hitler began to put in place his “final solution” for the Jews Term to know: lebensraum

Map of Annexation done by Germany

Hitler goes after Czechoslovakia France and Britain knew long before the invasion that hitler wanted Czech. Chamberlin, the PM of Britain at the time met with Hitler and they signed and agreed to give Hitler the section of Czech. known as Sudetenland After Hitler did this, Mussolini took Algeria and the two signed a treaty known as the “Pact of Steel”

Update the Map

Why did England end Appeasement of Hitler? Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia was the end of appeasement: It proved that Hitler had been lying at Munich. It showed that Hitler was not just interested in a 'Greater Germany' (the Czechs were not Germans). On 17th March, Chamberlain gave a speech saying that he could not trust Hitler not to invade other countries. On 31st March, Chamberlain guaranteed to defend Poland if Germany invaded.

Why end Now? Things happening in Europe November 1938: Kristallnacht - attacks on the Jews in Germany. March 1939: Czechoslovakia - Hitler invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia. May 1939: Pact of Steel: an alliance was formed between Germany and Italy to help each other in times of war. Things happening in Britain Churchill's speeches: attacked appeasement as “"a defeat without a war"”. October 1938: Oxford by-election - Chamberlain's Conservatives won, but the anti-appeasement candidate got lots of votes. Lack of trust: Britain was building up its armed forces throughout 1938 and 1939.
