Britain Reacts to Defiance An angry British king passed the Intolerable Acts Shut down Boston harbor Allowed soldiers to be housed in private homes Boston placed under martial law (military rule) Colonists reacted to the Intolerable Acts by meeting in the First Continental Congress and drafted a declaration of colonial rights in the declaration colonists were clear that they would use force back Resolved, N. C. D. 1. That they are entitled to life, liberty, and property, and they have never ceded to any sovereign power whatever a right to dispose of either without their consent. Resolved, N.C.D. 2. That our ancestors, who first settled these colonies, were at the time of their emigration from the mother country, entitled to all the rights, liberties, and immunities of free and natural- born subjects, within the realm of England.

Independence Declared Continental Congress tried to make amends between the colonies and Britain Olive Branch Petition The King rejected it Congress urged each colony to form it’s own government Richard Henry Lee said that the colonies should be free and independent states Congress pushed for a formal Declaration of Independence
