The Age of Exploration Chapter 6 section 2 p. 161-167

Key terms Age of Exploration - The period of European exploration overseas from about 1400-1600 Cape of Good Hope – the southern tip of Africa Northwest Passage – a sea route through North America (it was never found) Strait of Magellan – a waterway near the southern tip of South America Circumnavigate – to sail or fly completely around something such as Earth

Cape of Good Hope Strait of Magellan

Age of Exploration Advances in technology helped Europeans make long ocean voyages. The caravel was the best ship, the astrolabe and the mariner’s compass were improved for navigation and maps became more accurate Europeans were tired of paying high prices to the Italians for goods they brought back from Asia. Because of this they were inspired to seek new routes to Asia to get the goods for themselves. They could not go by land because the Ottoman Empire demanded money to use the roads and they couldn’t use the Mediterranean because the Italian merchants used the waterways for their trade.

Explorers Bartolomeu Diaz was the first person to sail around the Cape of Good Hope. Vasco de Gama was the first person to travel around the Cape of Good Hope from Portugal and make it all the way to Asia and back. De Gama brought back spices and precious stones as proof.

Explorers Columbus thought the Earth was round so he thought he could travel west and reach Asia. He sailed from Spain and landed on a small island in the Caribbean and thought he had reached the Indies so he called the people Indians.

Age of Exploration After Columbus “discovered” the new world, Spain and Portugal became rivals for new land They signed a treaty and created the line of demarcation through the Americas at 50° west longitude Everything east of the line belonged to Portugal Everything west of the line belonged to Spain

Line of Demarcation

Explorers John Cabot sailed from England to modern day Canada 5 years after Columbus. Sebation Cabot followed his father and tried to find the Northwest Passage, a sea route through North America. He never found it because it doesn’t exist.

Sebastian Cabot

Explorers Ferdinand Magellan left Spain with 5 ships and a crew of 250. He wanted to circumnavigate the globe. It took 38 days to get through the Strait of Magellan and only 3 ships made it. When Magellan saw the ocean he named it Pacific because it was so peaceful. Magellan made it to the Philippines but died after being shot with a poison arrow from a native tribe he was helping to fight. 1 ship and 18 of the 250 crew made it back to Spain.
