History of Greek Theater Mask Where did the mask originate from? What were the special features? What was the purpose/represe ntation? How many different styles of masks were there? History of Greek Theater Mask

Origin of the mask The use of mask in theater came from the worship of Dionysus(Greek god of fertility and wine) There were many rituals/ceremonies that had to do with the worship of Dionysus and many of them included the wearing of masks

Features of mask Mask were usually made of wood, cloth or leather and were very creative. Many mask were decorated with hair(human or animal) to complete the look and effect. One small hole was drilled where the pupil of the eye would be for the actor to see through.

Purpose of the mask there were female roles but woman were not allowed to perform on stage, Therefore, men wore female masks when they played female roles. Was helpful when an actor had to play more than one role. A change of masks was all they needed to switch characters.

Representation of mask Tragos(Tragedy) Comedy The masks usually represented supernatural beings, ancestors, and imagined figures. Can also represent portraits. They were also used to show expressions

Greek theatrical performances were very important during the ancient times and they were acknowledged as very significant events. Purpose behind the Amphitheater Design? Do any Greek Theaters exist? If so where? How many people did the average theater seat? What were the parts of a Greek Theater and what were the purposes of each? Are there any modern examples of a Greek style theater? Theater Construction

Amphitheater design The way many amphitheaters were built created a magnificent music and voice clarity for people on the front and back rows They were usually were usually built on hillsides There were 78 rows of seats that would hold 15,000-16,000 people.

Teatro Greco Teatro Greco is the ancient Greek amphitheater in Taormina, and is one of the largest ancient theaters in Sicily, second to the one in Siracusa. However in the second century AD the Romans rebuilt the theater and changed its appearance drastically making many changes

Greek Amphitheater parts Greek tragedies and comedies were always performed in outdoor theaters Orchestra: was normally circular. It was a space where the chorus would dance, sing, and interact with the actors who were on the stage near the scene. Theatron: area where the spectators sat Skene: was the building directly behind the stage. There was also access to the roof of the skene from behind, so that actors playing gods and other characters could appear on the roof, if needed Parodos: are the paths by which the chorus and some actors made their entrances and exits. The audience also used them to enter and exit the theater before and after the performance.

Modern examples Movie theaters we have today are in Greek style layout. Examples include: AMC, NCG, Regal, Woodruff Arts Center, Aarons Amphitheater at Lakewood, etc
