What about a series of three with one word after the word “and”? This is often referred to as the Oxford Comma. I say use it! Some teachers don’t. What do you think these children would say? I love cooking, children, and dogs.

Still not sure, try these hints. If you reverse the adjectives does the sentence still make sense? Today was a damp dismal day. YES Then insert a comma between them

If you inserted “and” between them instead of a comma would they still make sense? Today was a damp spring day. no Then DON’T use a comma.

Rule #3 Use a comma to separate independent clauses in a compound sentence. We waited for 2 hours, but Santa never came down the chimney.

Exception Unless it’s a really short compound sentence. Lisa ran and I fell.
