Fall Semester Final Exam Review

Chapter 6 What conditions did factory workers face in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s? How did labor unions and the federal government attempt to control the power of big business? Describe the new business strategies which allowed men such as Carnegie and Rockefeller to acquire a great amount of wealth. Why were these men referred to as “robber barons?” Do you agree with this assessment? Why or why not?

Chapter 7 Explain the role and structure of political machines. Why did immigrants play such an important role in political machines? What were the effects of the massive number of immigrants arriving to the United States in the late 1800’s? Be sure to mention urbanization, government response, and the response of many native born Americans.

Chapter 8 Explain how Southern states reacted to African-Americans attempting to exercise their political rights. Specific examples! Compare and contrast the views of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois regarding the future of education for African-Americans. Which viewpoint would appeal most to African-Americans?

Chapter 9 Describe the goals of the Progressives. Were the Progressives successful in achieving their goals? Should Teddy Roosevelt be considered a Progressive president? Why or why not?

Chapter 10 Define Imperialism and explain the factors which led America to become an imperial power. What were the causes and effects of the Spanish-American War?

Chapter 11 Explain the reasons why America decided to join WWI. How did the U.S. government “convince” Americans to support/join the war?

Chapter 12 How did the Americans and the government react to the possible threat of Communism? Explain why there was a growth in anti-immigrant feelings in America. Give examples how native born Americans attempted to stop the influence of immigrants.

Chapter 13 What were the causes and effects of the Prohibition? What was the Scopes Trial? How was this case a reflection of the growing rift in America between traditional and modern ideas? What was the Harlem Renaissance? What contributions did this movement make to African-American history?

Chapter 14 Explain the causes of the Great Depression. (minimum of 3) How did President Hoover react to the issues of the Great Depression? Why were his policies a failure?

Chapter 15 What was the New Deal? What were the most important agencies or legislation of the New Deal? Summarize the reasons why some people or organizations opposed the New Deal. Ultimately, what lessons did America learn from the experiences of the Great Depression and the New Deal? Support your answer!
