MIND MAP

THE FOX SOUND   Foxes are mostly silent animals but this does not mean they do not have a broad repertoire of sounds. A wide range of calls is used from cubs’ small barks asking for their mother’s attention, to warning calls, to barks and screams performed to locate another fox or a mate. Calls are made all year around but most people hear foxes calling in winter, perhaps because there is less vegetation to muffle the sound.

Interesting facts about Foxem Foxes live either in the forest or in the field. Usually have several burrows, one is their permanent residence, while others only give them temporary shelter in danger or during inclement weather. Lis is lazy in digging burrows and therefore often uses the badger burrows, and even live with him (sometimes drives the badger).

Lis occupies an important place in European culture. Fox feeds substantially at night. If, however, does not expect danger, it starts hunting up from the south, or slightly earlier (especially in winter, because the harder it is to get prey).   Lis occupies an important place in European culture. It is traditionally a symbol of cunning. Enemies foxes are large birds of prey (eagles), as well as owls, which can kidnap puppies

Sleep about 9-10 hours per day.   Sleep about 9-10 hours per day. Foxes have very good eyesight and hearing. They are able to hear the squeal of a mouse from a distance of 100 meters or a crow, which years 0.5 kilometer away.

INFORMATION Foxes prey on various animals, such as rabbits, rats, frogs and birds. They also feed on berries and scraps of human food from trash cans. Red foxes are actually gray or brown when they are born, and it takes a few weeks before red fur begins to appear. The average lifespan of a red fox is between 2 and 4 years, though most survive longer when isolated from the wild. Red foxes live on several continents, including Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. They do not thrive in any one particular environment, but prosper in habitats ranging from grassland to desert. The red fox's body measures 18 to 33.75 inches long, and the tail adds an additional 12 to 21.75 inches. It weighs 6.5 to 24 pounds and can live up to four years in the wild. It lives in both wild settings such as forests, grasslands, mountains and deserts, as well as alongside humans in towns and cities. The creature is an omnivore, meaning it eats both plant and animal material. Rabbits, fruit, fish, worms and dead animals are among the creature's menu items, and foxes in the city also feed from garbage cans. Unlike wolves, the red often hunts alone and communicates with other foxes in the area by making scent posts. Individuals come together during mating season, which is usually during the winter time. A litter of young foxes consists of two to 12 pups. Both parents participate in raising the pups, and by the fall, the pups are usually ready to live on their own.

The fox cubs   When fox cubs are born they are completely dependent upon their mother for food and warmth. They are deaf and blind, weigh about 100 grames, are 10 centimeters long and have short black fur. For the firste couple of weeks the mother rarely leaves them and depends on the male and other adult foxes for food. At this point, the cub’s eyes start to open and they can start exploring. At about four weeks of age, the cubs venture outside but remain very close to the den. They are beginning to moult into a reddish colour. A couple of weeks later they are covered in orange fur and their faces have more vulpine shape. The ears and the snout grow longer. At this stage, cubs are very active, playing for long periods, chasing each other or chewing a variety of objects that they find. When 12 weeks old, the cubs start following the adults more and probably learn where to find food as now they will start foraging for themselves. By the time they are 16-18 weeks the cubs are able to find food independently from the adults but their movements are still restricted, only covering part of their range. At 6 months they are hard to tell from the adults and by the age of 10 months they are fully grown. From birth until four weeks of age, fox cubs rely on their mother’s milk. After this period, the cubs start to take solid food. The food provided by the adult foxes depends on what is available in the territory where the fox family lives.
