Open-ended Smart Product Design Objective: Design a new product that does not exist or significantly modify an existing product Product Requirements: Using your Arduino, incorporate sensors and output devices, resulting in a “smart” product that senses its environment and responds or reports based on this input. Freshman Design Exposition: Culminating event where you and your teammates show off your work to a panel of judges. Design Video: Create a 2-5min YouTube video to showcase your project

Getting Started You have already implemented many sensors and devices Photoresistors Thermistors Switches Conductivity Devices: LEDs Servos Piezospeaker Motors Solenoid valves Transistors Heaters *Blue text denotes student-owned sensors/devices We will implement or showcase more throughout ENGR 122 Sensors: Infrared PING))) Accelerometer RF Transceiver Devices: Motor drivers RGB LED A large library of additional sensors/devices will be available to rent for your project.

Getting Started Safety Thinking of a project can be the hardest part. You will keep an ongoing list (Idea Wallet) of potential project ideas as part of your homework. Homework prompts include: Bug of yours Bug of someone else's (friend, family, acquaintance) Hobby, sport, or recreational activity Specific field of study Community focused idea In class 5, you will start formalizing your groups and begin combining/narrowing your project ideas. You are given the freedom to design, develop, and create a project of your team’s choice. Each project will be different and safety concerns will be a factor for each project. Keep this in mind when you are thinking through project ideas. Safety Note: You are not limited to the themes from the homework prompts.

Innovation Finding new ways to do things Recognized as the single most important element that determines the success of companies in the modern economy IDEAS paired with ACTION People creating VALUE though the IMPLEMENTATION of new ideas Innovators are typically T-shaped people Wide breadth of knowledge across disciplines Deep knowledge in one or two specific areas

Developing Ideas For Your Project Embody Learning Personas: Anthropologist – Observant Experimenter – Persistent Cross-Pollinator – Curious Reflect on your daily experiences. Write down all ideas and thoughts throughout each day. Talk to friends, family, acquaintances, and experts in a given field. Explore current and emerging technology and products. Stay aware of current events. Set aside designated time for reflection and thinking about ideas. Don’t worry about a solution; focus on idea generation.
