Learning & Teaching Conference 21 March 2018 To flip, or not to flip… that’s the question Dr Joan Harvey & Dr Javier Munguia (School of Engineering) Learning & Teaching Conference 21 March 2018
What is flipped learning? Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which the conventional notion of classroom-based learning is inverted, so that students are introduced to the learning material before class, with classroom time then being used to deepen understanding through discussion with peers and problem-solving activities facilitated by teachers.
The context: Msc/Stage 4 Module: Design for Human systems integration Large class [circa 100] Mixed levels of English ability Potentially different learning styles and personality types compared to many other students, e.g.: Engineers prefer abstract conceptualization and active experimentation learning styles to reflexive or experiential learning ones.
What we did “Eliminated” lectures and converted them into 2hr “practicals” Designed interactive exercises to promote Team-work and group thinking Redesigned the MOFs and changed the classroom layouts
RESULTS: PROS CONS Allows top students to shine Teams assimilate the PURPOSE for each topic studied Can help with exam revision by structuring knowledge around examples and cases they have engaged with. Improves critical thinking High scores in Evasys for “Active teamwork” Loads of preparation work!!! Students won’t always READ before class MUST prepare CLEAR session instructions Preparing guidelines, handouts and templates Amount of Marking and feedback Selecting and booking suitable rooms within the campus Organizing timetables
It must be refined year after year… Bottom line: Is it a lot of work: YES! Are the results worth it: YES! Do we recommend it?: YES! But… It must be refined year after year… THANKS Dr Javier Munguia Javier.munguia@ncl.ac.uk Dr Joan Harvey Joan.harvey@ncl.ac.uk
