Options for Freshmen Choices 9th Graders can make for their 10th Grade year in Social Studies

First off… the requirements: You likely will have to take your second year of American History next year, because… CR requires three years of Social Studies, And two of them have to be American History. Next year should be your year #2. Traditionally, most students take the two years in 9th and 10th Grade. Click anywhere 4 times

10th Grade Options Literacy Studies in American History II Academic American Civilization II Honors American Civilization II Advanced Placement Unites States Click anywhere 6 times

10th Grade American History All students will learn the same curriculum It starts at the end of WWII (1945), and finishes at present day Also included: US Government basics Economics basics Click anywhere 5 times

So, what’s the difference? Literacy Studies provides more help to students who struggle with longer readings and essays. Academic has more reading, essays and analysis of speeches, images, and graphs. Honors has HIGH expectations for yet longer essays, readings that you’ll be expected to complete without much help, and much deeper analysis Click anywhere 3 times

So, what should you choose? Teachers will make recommendations for each student, based on what they have observed of work and work ethic, compared against the expectations of 10th grade courses. Click anywhere 2 times

Options if you’re doing really well in Social Studies this year If you’re getting an EASY “A” – talk to your teacher; who might recommend moving to a course level which is better suited for your skills in Social Studies. YOU MIGHT BE READY TO TAKE A COURSE DEMANDING MORE OF YOU! Click anywhere 3 times

Options for next year if you’re struggling this year in Social Studies If you’re struggling just to pass, and you’re DONE with working so hard just to “get by,” talk to your teacher, who might recommend moving to a course level which is better suited for your skills in Social Studies. YOU MIGHT NEED TO MOVE TO A COURSE BETTER FOR YOUR SKILLS. Click anywhere 3 times

For most students for next year Unless you’re so advanced for the class you’re in you’re bored, or… You’re working VERY hard and are not achieving the grade you want/need, then STAY IN THE LEVEL YOU’RE CORRENTLY IN! If you’re exceptionally successful in Honors, and are ready for college, discuss with your teacher the possibility of taking ADVANCED PLACEMENT US HISTORY Click anywhere 8 times

So, what is this AP US thing?

What makes Advanced Placement different? It’s a college course Taught with college texts With a college level syllabus With college level reading and writing. You’ll do lots of reading on your own… And lots of analyzing during class. And, it covers ALL of American history… starts all over again. But, you can earn college credit… And it might just be the difference that gets you into the college of your dreams! YOU NEED TO BE READY TO WORK HARD! If you’re in AP US, and doing just fine, take one of the AP World or Euro courses. If you’re in Honors, talk to your teacher to see if you’re ready for the jump INTO COLLEGE. Click anywhere 13 times

And now, you must choose…
