Objectives & Purpose Learn about Ernest Hemingway and his writing style. Complete an allegory challenge: identify and explain at least 5 symbols from the short story. Think about ways to apply Hemingway’s style into our own writing. Better understand allegory and how it looks in modern writing.
Teaching Hemingway: So Ugly, So Beautiful
“A Clean Well-Lighted Place” Answer the following questions and turn in at the end of class: Describe Hemingway’s style. Why does the story start and end the way it does? What is the significance of “insomnia” at the end of the story? Why might the older waiter dismiss his dissatisfaction as such? The revelation of “nada.” What is it? In what ways is “A Clean-Well Lighted Place” a modernist work? Consider how it embodies some of the characteristics of this movement as well as ways in which its style and structure might prefigure later works.
Allegory Challenge The characters in Hemingway’s “A Clean Well-Lighted Place” are relatively flat. As readers, we do not learn much about their personal lives or even their names. This is because, rather than standing for individual human characters with thoughts, feelings, and preferences, Hemingway’s characters stand for certain ideas or allegories. With a partner or group of people, define the allegorical meaning evidence within each character in the story. Then, try to identify at least two more symbols and define their allegorical meaning.
Closure Have fun and try to imitate the style of Ernest Hemingway by painting the picture on the right with your own words.
