Presentation transcript:

Leadership in Public Service Dr. Joe DiPietro President, University of Tennessee System Thank you for having me today.   I realize I’m the only thing standing between you and the weekend, so I promise to be brief. I was asked to spend a few minutes today talking about leadership in public service. Leading is challenging in any environment. Leading in the public sector can be even more so. The work of a public servant is never done. But it does need to be done well.

Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model the way Inspire a shared vision Challenge the process Enable others to act Encourage the heart Practices of Exemplary Leadership The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner   Leadership is not about personality; it’s about behavior Their five practices of exemplary leadership have been helpful to me. Model the way - Leaders establish principles concerning the way people (constituents, peers, colleagues, and customers alike) should be treated and the way goals should be pursued. They create standards of excellence and then set an example for others to follow.  Inspire a shared vision - Leaders passionately believe that they can make a difference. They envision the future, creating an ideal and unique image of what the organization can become. Challenge the process - Leaders search for opportunities to change the status quo. They look for innovative ways to improve the organization. They experiment and take risks. Enable others to act - Leaders foster collaboration and build spirited teams. They actively involve others. Leaders understand that mutual respect is what sustains extraordinary efforts; they strive to create an atmosphere of trust and human dignity. They strengthen others, making each person feel capable and powerful. Encourage the heart -Accomplishing extraordinary things in organizations is hard work. To keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that individuals make.

My Advice Build a team that will help you Ask for advice Remove obstacles Treat others the way you would like to be treated Get to know people Serve those you lead Leaders do not always set out to become leaders   Perhaps you did not seek out the position you hold, but now you are a leader People look to you to make decisions/take a stand. My advice to you: (Talk through samples of each) Build a team that will help you Ask for advice Help others do their jobs/Remove obstacles Treat others the way you would like to be treated at work and outside of work Get to know people and families Hold fast to the fundamental tenant to SERVE those you are entrusted to lead

Questions? I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
