Speed, Velocity and Acceleration 22.1     Lesson 2      Speed, Velocity and Acceleration

Key Words: Speed Distance Velocity Direction Acceleration Change in Speed

The distance an object travels in a certain time. Speed The distance an object travels in a certain time. Unit – Meters per Second - M/S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHmEpqUFLZ8

Question Usain bolt managed to run 100 metres in 9.58 seconds! Can you and your partner find out how fast he was running?

Answer Speed = Distance travelled ÷ Time Taken Usain Bolts speed = 100 M ÷ 9.58 S = 10.44 M/S

Task - Calculate the speed of a classmate Question: How fast is _________________ Hypothesis ___________________ Experiment Design __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Result ________M/S

VELOCITY  An objects speed in a certain direction Example a car is travelling from Ras Al Khaimah to Dubai at a speed of 100 Km/h. The speed is 100 km/h The velocity is 100 km/h South

Is the velocity constant or changing in the examples below?

Answer Velocity Task: Using a motion sensor some of our classmates will try and maintain a constant velocity.  How will we know if the velocity is constant?  The graph should look like this.......

Acceleration The Change of speed in a certain time Formula: Change in speed ÷ Time taken

Example: A Ferrari F50 can reach 200 km/h (124 mph) in 7 seconds. Calculate it's acceleration. Acceleration = Change in speed ÷ Time Taken Change in speed = Final Speed – initial speed = 200km/h - 0km/h = 200km/h Acceleration = 200km/h ÷ 7 Seconds = 28.5 m/s

Question A train is travelling at 10m/s. Over a period of 8 seconds it accelerates to a speed of 25 m/s. Calculate it's acceleration.

Answer Acceleration = Change in speed ÷ time taken Change in speed = 26 m/s - 10 m/s = 15m/s Acceleration = 16 m/s ÷ 8 = 2 m/s2

Pop Quiz 1. What is the formula for calculating speed?                                                2. A car travels from Sharjah to Dubai (20km) in 1 hour and 30 minutes. What is the cars average speed?   3. On the way back from Dubai there is less traffic and the cars average speed is 40km/h. What is it's velocity? 4. When a plane takes off the runway it's speed is 300 km/h. 60 seconds later it's speed increases to 500 km/h. Calulate it's acceleration. Pop Quiz
