Lab Techniques & Separation of Mixtures 9/15/15

Drill Are the following physical or chemical changes? Boiling water Cutting a piece of copper wire Dissolving sugar into water Baking a cake **Place signed documents in the back tray!

Agenda Drill Separation Methods Lab Technique – Bunsen Burner Separate a Mixture Lab HW

Separation Methods Chromatography Distillation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxNfJLMNS 4E) Fractional Distillation Evaporation Filtration Magnetism

Lab Techniques- Bunsen Burner How to light Parts of the flame

Lab Safety Wear goggles! Never leave a burner unattended Pull back long hair

Separating a Mixture Lab Write a procedure to separate the mixture that has: Sawdust Salt Sand Need to be specific and tell me what equipment you use and what type of separation technique you are using!

Separation of a Mixture If you use a burner… make sure to place liquid into an evaporating dish Make sure you have ring stand at the appropriate height with wire gauze on it DO NOT touch evaporating dish after use Use crucible tongs to place dish on table When you done heating, place evaporating dish on wire gauze to signify that it could still be hot.

Alternate Activity Create Procedure with Group Read pages 44-52 in Chemistry book P. 46 (9, 10) P. 47 (11-17) **All answers must be in complete sentences

HW Study for Quiz Should be able to do “I Can” statements First page of study guide Scientific Notation Must be able to complete Scientific Notation in class
