Human Body Organ Systems

The Human body has 11 organ systems – cardiovascular (circulatory), digestive, endocrine, excretory (urinary), immune(lymphatic), integumentary, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, and skeletal. Let’s review what we know about them!

Cardiovascular (Circulatory) System Function Carries oxygen and food to cells Carries carbon dioxide away from cells Transports nutrients, chemical messengers, gases, and wastes in the blood Organs/Structure Heart Blood Blood vessels

Respiratory System Function Organs/Structures Mouth Nose Trachea Adds oxygen to the blood Removes Carbon Dioxide from the blood Organs/Structures Mouth Nose Trachea Bronchi lungs

Digestive System Function Organs/Structures Breaks down food into units that can be absorbed by the body Used by the body’s cells for energy Organs/Structures Mouth Esophagus Stomach Intestines

Endocrine System Function Organs/Structures Controls cell function with hormones: Growth Development Metabolism Reproduction Organs/Structures pituitary gland Thyroid thymus

Urinary (Excretory) System Function Removes waste from the body Maintains body fluid volume, pH and electrolyte levels Organs/Structures Kidney bladder

Lymphatic (immune) System Function Protects the body from disease Organs/Structures White blood cells Spleen Lymph nodes

Integumentary System Function Organs/Structures Provides a protective barrier for the body Contains sensory receptors for pain, touch and temperature Organs/Structures Skin Hair Nails Sweat and Oil Glands

Muscular System Function Organs/Structures Works with skeletal system to produce movement Moves bones and maintains structure Organs/Structures Skeletal muscles Smooth muscles Tendons

Skeletal System Function Organs/Structures Supports the body Works with muscular system to move the body Protects major organs Organs/Structures Bones Cartilage Ligaments

Nervous System Function Organs/Structures Controls cell function with electrical signals Organs/Structures Brain Spinal cord Nerves

Reproductive System Function Produces reproductive cells (gametes) Responsible for producing offspring Female organs provide environment for development of fetus
