Lesson 7 Terms and Definitions PART 1 Human Body Systems Lesson 7 Terms and Definitions PART 1

Q: How do nutrients get from the food you eat to the cells of your body?

Absorption Absorption – process by which nutrients pass through the cells that line the digestive tract. Humans need lots of nutrients We need a large surface area to absorb lots of nutrients

What increases the surface area? 4 things that increase the surface area of SI Length Folds in wall of SI Villi Microvilli

Length and Folds Length – 6-8 meters long!!!! Folds in the wall of the Small Intestine http://intro.bio.umass.edu/manual/images/6/6c/SmallIntestines.jpg http://www.fashion-res.com/EX/10-08-06/small_intestine.gif

Villi and Microvilli Villi – fingerlike projections in the wall of the SI. Microvilli – tiny folds in the surface of the individual cells that line the SI. Smaller pieces of food are absorbed faster!

Microvilli Villi Folds

Folds, Villi, and Microvilli increase the internal surface area 600 times! http://www.blakeneymanor.com/images/carryon/shock.jpg

What goes where? Blood Vessels Amino acids, minerals, vitamins, sugars http://www.fashion-res.com/EX/10-08-06/small_intestine.gif

What goes where? Lymphatic Vessel Fats, fatty acids http://www.fashion-res.com/EX/10-08-06/small_intestine.gif
