CSIRO's research programs Discovery Enabling efficient discovery of new mineral resources through advanced technologies and geological research. Hard rock mining Developing next generation hard rock mining technologies. Processing Developing and optimising mineral processes for greater efficiencies and mineral recoveries. Characterisation Delivers quality characterisation data and expertise to improve understanding of mineral ores from exploration to processing. Sensing and sorting Developing new sensor technologies for increasing value recovery and productivity on-line. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

CASE STUDY Bulk ore sorting to make low grade ore economically viable The world’s high-grade mineral ore deposits are depleting and new mineral ores are increasingly lower in quality. CSIRO developed the world’s first sensor system for large-scale ore sorting which rapidly determines ore grade to cost-effectively sort minerals of value from waste. CSIRO's ore sorter technology uses a sensor which blasts batches of ore with short pulses of radio waves, assessing ore grade and enabling high rate sorting. Not only can the ore sorter significantly boost productivity for mining companies, it can also significantly reduce operational annual carbon dioxide emissions and reduce water consumption. CSIRO’s ore sorter technology offers a step change (up to 30 per cent) boost in productivity, sorting high value ore from waste on-line at a rate of up to 4000 tonnes per hour. CSIRO successfully completed a trial of the technology with Newcrest Mining, where ore sensor technology demonstrated rapid detection of ore grade on a primary conveyor. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

CASE STUDY Chysos’ PhotonAssay: x-ray gold analysis CSIRO developed a gold analysis technique that offers a much faster, more accurate way to detect gold than traditional chemical analysis methods. The technique – called PhotonAssay - uses high powered X-rays to bombard rock samples and activate atoms of gold and other metals. A highly sensitive detector then picks up the unique atomic signatures from these elements to determine their concentrations. The PhotonAssay is two-to-three times more accurate than the industry standard 'fire assay' and can deliver results in a few minutes without generating any of the toxic waste products of other assay systems. In 2017, Chrysos Corporation commercialised PhotonAssay, bringing the technology to the market. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

CASE STUDY Mining3: the world’s largest hard rock mining research powerhouse Mining3 is an industry-driven, global leader in mining research and innovation. CSIRO joined forces with former CRCMining in 2016 to create the world’s largest industry-directed research effort focussed on innovation in surface and underground mining. Mining3 develops and delivers breakthrough innovation and technologies that transform the productivity, sustainability and safety of the mining industry. Drawing on an extensive network, Mining3 has the scale and industry focus to tackle the greatest challenges facing mining; to shorten the innovation cycle and drive real outcomes quickly for its industry members.
