Disease prevention and health promotion -better use of existing preventive measures

CAUSES OF DEATH

World Health Report 2001 has indicated that non-communicable diseases accounted for nearly 60% of deaths and 46% of the global burden of diseases. 75% of the total deaths due to NCDs occur in developing countries.

WHERE WE ARE STANDING D A L Ys D A L Ys 63.7lakh 22.63 lakh 2004 2004 20.72 lakh 1998 2000 Diabetes Stroke

Communicable disease burden in India The World Bank estimates 21% of communicable diseases in India are water related. Of these diseases, diarrhoea alone killed over 700,000 Indians in 1999 (estimated) – over 1,600 deaths each day. On 18 August 2010 media reported an outbreak of anthrax. In April 2009 the World Health Organization declared the emergence of a novel influenza virus.

Disease prevention and health promotion- better use of existing preventive measures reduces the global health burden of disease by 70% (WHR 08)

Trained nurse and midwife can deliver approximately 80% of the health care and up to 90% of the pediatric care currently provided by primary care physician at equal or better quality and lower costs.

Nurses lead the way…….that nursing could serve as a powerhouse of leadership in making PHC a reality. (Mabler,1985)

The essence of PHC Health is not a commodity that is given, it must be generated from within Health action should not be imposed from outside, foreign to the people, It must be a response of the community to problems they perceive, supported by, an adequate infrastructure. (Mabler 1998)

Current situation of manpower As on march 2007,the overall shortfall in the post of HW(F)/ANM was 12.6% of the total requirement. In case of HW (M) there was a short fall of 55.4%of the requirement.

the public sector and 63 % were available in the private sectors Contin…. Surveys in about 30 developing countries indicate that only 35 % of selected medicines were available in the public sector and 63 % were available in the private sectors

Contin…. The share of government in health spending varies from 76% in Europe to 34% in South-East Asia The average annual growth rate was 1.3% for 1997–2007 compared with 1.6% for 1987–1997.

Integrative Care model

Contin…. 1) The patient with sub-acute to chronic low back pain or neck pain consults the primary care unit. 2) The patient and the general practitioner develop a treatment plan. 3) The patient is offered conventional care, i.e. treatment as usual.

Contin…. 4) Should complementary therapies be considered appropriate, these are integrated into the treatment plan by way of a consensus case conference with the integrative medicine provider team. 5) The patient is offered complementary therapies as part of the treatment plan, i.e. integrative care. 6) When the treatment plan is completed the case management is finished. (Please note that integrative care was only delivered for up to 12 weeks.)
