The First European Contact By: Savannah Thomas Period: 5

The Vikings

The very first European explorers are considered to be the first Vikings.

They are recognized as the first European explorers because their expeditions took place during the 10th century.

The Saga of Eric the Red was a first hand account of numerous Viking voyages.

Samuel de Champlain

Born 1567 In Brouage, France Died 1635 In Quebec City

By 1604 he sailed to Acadia with Pierre Dugua de Mons who had the vision of settling a French colony there.

Twice, in 1605 and 1606, Champlain sailed as far as Cape Cod.

John Cabot

First voyage: 1496 Sailing westward in the North Atlantic Due to uneven weather patterns his first expedition failed

By the time 1497 rolled around Cabot took off sailing on his second expedition

Some suggest Cabot saw two islands, and error caused by Newfoundland’s Conception and Trinity Bays arriving at the coast of East Asia

The Italian explorer under the rule of Finland travelled to Newfoundland and later Cape Breton.

Jacques Cartier

Born 1491 In Saint- Malo, France Jacques Cartier made three major North American voyages

A year later, King Francis sent Cartier on a second voyage

He was sent in hopes of finding settlement along the St Lawrence River on behalf of France

Expressions of Culture

Questions? Each row is a group, you’ll 10 minutes to discuss your question and share your opinion. Once you’re done the groups will switch so we have a one, two and three in each group. Your job is to represent your groups opinion to the best of your ability. If there is time left over we will have one big group discussion.

Group One Of all three explorers which do you think had the most success? Explain.

Group Two Do you think the explorers had a right to invade the Indigenous communities, strictly for the progression of their country? Explain.

Group Three Indigenous people today are still fighting for the rights they lost and the treaties that were broken, what is your opinion about the statement “they should just get over it already” because it happened so long ago? Explain
