Tone What is tone? Tone is difficult to define, it is related to mood and style. The best way to describe it is by saying that a film’s tone is essentially its flavor. It is how it makes us feel, and how it achieves that effect on us. Many elements contribute to a film’s tone: camerawork, lighting, editing, the writing, the performances, the music, the color scheme, and so on.
