13 Colonies

Mercantilism Economic system where nations created and maintained wealth by controlling trade Production Crops Tobacco, sugar, coco, coffee, etc. Manufactured Goods Weapons, fabrics, alcohol, etc. SLAVES

Mercantilism - economic system where nations created and maintained wealth by controlling trade. Imports - goods brought in from other countries Exports - goods sold to other countries Tariffs - Taxes on imported goods Free Enterprise - economic competition with little government control

England believed the colonies existed to serve them 2. Wanted more exports than imports 3. Required colonists to trade with mainly England 4. Set tariffs on products 5. Sailors had to be English 6. Ships carrying goods had to be inspected 7. All ships on their way to America had to stop in England & pay taxes

The colonies began to smuggle and resist British control. The British began to tighten and control, inevitably leading to trouble. The colonies began to smuggle and resist British control. The first colonists lived in Jamestown, Virginia 2. The colonies had governments within America, but the British were technically in charge. 3. The trip from England to America took about 2 ½ months by boat. 4. The colonies were divided into 3 groups: New England, Middle, & Southern colonies 5. The very first attempts at colonization were failures.

Jamestown was the first capital of Virginia. 9. Jamestown was made of 104 colonists who landed in April 1607. 10. Many came to America in search of religious freedom. 11. The Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620. 12. Georgia was named after King George III.
