New England Colonies Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut New Hampshire

The People Religion Puritans Church of England, “purified”, getting rid of all Catholic practices Separatists Did not believe the Church of England represented true faith. Both were persecuted.

Separatists fled to Netherlands where they lived for twelve years. Left for North America, became known as pilgrims (because they were taking a long journey).

The Mayflower September 1620, 102 passengers set sail for North America. After 60 days of straying off course they landed on Cape Cod, what is today Massachusetts. Mayflower Compact: An agreement to set up the colony’s government. John Carver was the first governor.

Massachusetts Colony “Great Migration”-Puritan’s escape persecution and bad relations in England. From 1630-1640 over 20,000 Puritans left for Massachusetts. John Winthrop: Set to build a model community; belief in duty, hard work, and education as part of their obedience to God. Puritans thought that dancing and playing games would lead to laziness.

Puritan Intolerance leads to new colonies Connecticut founded: 1635, Thomas Hooker Believed men of all religions should take part in government Rhode Island: 1636, Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson. Believed people should not be fined for not attending church New Hampshire: 1623 People who wanted to work in the fur trade industry with more freedom
