The Basics StFX Degree = 120 credits Four-Year Degree Pattern = 30 credits per year Degree Patterns – Majors, minors, pairs, electives, approved electives. Course Requirements – listed in Academic Calendar Declaring Major or Honours -Talk in general about getting a degree. Explain that all students need to earn 120 credits to graduate, with exception of diploma programs and nursing students. -Explain that the four year degree pattern, which many students want to pursue requires students to complete 30 credits each year. -Explain that although the a Bachelor of Arts degree is flexible and provides students with the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses, you cannot just take whatever you want. There is a pattern to your degree and courses requirements that you need to be aware of and fulfilling in order to be eligible to graduate. -All BA and BBA students should declare their major at the end of their second year. Business students have to meet minimum requirements to do a major. We will discuss degree patterns and requirements later.

Terms to Know

Pair HIST 100 Definition Examples SOCI 100 SOCI 250 Twelve credits in one subject, with six credits at the 200 level or higher. As exceptions, language pairs in French, Celtic Studies and Classics may be composed of 12 credits at the 100 level. A student may complete only one pair from a department, and may not complete a pair in the major or minor subject. A pair may not be completed in any of the professional or applied program disciplines: AQUA, BSAD, ENGR, HKIN, HNU, INFO, NURS. Approved Elective The term approved elective is defined differently for human kinetics students and science students. For science students approved electives are normally science or math. For human kinetics students approved electives are anything other than the following professional disciplines: Aquatic Resources Business Administration Engineering Information Systems Human Kinetics Human Nutrition Nursing

Degrees Offered in Human Kinetics

Degrees Offered in Human Kinetics BA in Human Kinetics with Major in Kinesiology BA in Human Kinetics with Major in Pre-Education B.Sc. in Human Kinetics with Major in Kinesiology B.Sc. in Human Kinetics with Major in Pre-Education B.Sc. In Human Kinetics with Major in Kinesiology and Minor in Health Sciences B.Sc. In Human Kinetics with Major in Kinesiology and Minor in Nutrition http://www.sites.stfx.ca/human_kinetics/honours_program - You do not declare which stream you would like to pursue until the end of your second year – March 31, 2015 your applications will be do. One more year to help you figure it out. -Can complete an honours degree in any one of these degree patterns. The honours degree patterns students must complete HKIN 491 – which is a non-credit seminar course in fourth year and HKIN 493 – Thesis – 3 credits. The HKIN 493 replaces a HKIN elective in your degree pattern. -If you are pursuing a Pre-Ed stream you will have to take the following in replace of HKIN electives: HKIN 301, one of HKIN 396/397; HKIN 491(seminar) and HKIN 493 (thesis) -Students in the honours program usual select an advisor to work with in their third year of study. You should meet with several faculty advisors in your third year to help you determine an appropriate advisor with common research interests. April 15 of third year is the deadline to have a faculty advisor.

Degree Patterns Students are required to complete 120 credits to earn a degree (with the exception of the B.Sc. In Nursing, which requires 126). Typically, students will take 30 credits per year for four years. Academic Information

Dean’s List At the end of each academic year, students who have carried at least 24 credits and have earned an average of at least 75% will be named to the Dean’s List if they rank in the top: 20 % in the first year 25% in the sophomore year 33 1/3% in the junior or senior year

Did you Know? While earning your degree at StFX, you can… Change programs Change majors/minors Take courses at another university on a Letter of Permission (LOP) Take a lighter course load Add/drop courses Appeal an academic penalty (other than Probation) Appeal a grade Get an override into a closed course Remind students that there are consequences to dropping courses and to consult with an academic advisor before they do so. Remind them there are deadlines to drop/add courses and for applying for majors and minors. Reinforce that switching into professional courses can be quite competitive, especially HK and BBA. Advise that they have apply for a program change and typically these forms do not get reviewed until May each year?
