So what is a living thing? Anything that possesses all of the characteristics of life is called an organism. The characteristics of life are as follows:
What is Biology & Characteristics of Life. What is Biology??? Bio- = life -logy = study of BIOLOGY = study of life (living things) ORGANISM = a living.

Characteristics of life Review!

What Are the Main Characteristics of organisms? Made of CELLS Require ENERGY (food) REPRODUCE (species) Maintain HOMEOSTASIS DNA RESPOND to environment GROW and DEVELOP Change over time copyright cmassengale

Characteristics of Life Made of Cells Living things are organized. They show an orderly structure. Universal genetic code All living things are made of cells that contain DNA!!! This is where organisms store the information they need to live, grow and reproduce.

Characteristics of Life 3. Reproduction Living things reproduce. Making offspring is essential to the survival of a species 4. Growth and Development Living things grow Increase the amount of living material and form new structures Living things develop All the changes in the life of an organism

Characteristics of Life 5. Response to Stimuli/environment Living things adjust to their environment – air, temperature, other living things, etc. Ex: Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the cold Stimulus = a condition that an organism must adjust to Response = a reaction to a stimulus

Characteristics of Life 6. Maintain Homeostasis Regulate and maintain an internal balance Why? They need an internal environment suitable for survival. To do this, they respond to internal changes.

Characteristics of Life 7. Adapt Adaptation = a structure, behavior, or internal process that helps organisms survive Evolution = the gradual accumulation of adaptations 8. Use materials and Energy All organisms must take in materials and energy to grow and develop and reproduce.

LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION Nonliving Levels: ATOM (element) MOLECULE (compounds like carbohydrates & proteins) ORGANELLES (nucleus, ER, Golgi …) copyright cmassengale

LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION Living Levels: CELL (makes up ALL organisms) TISSUE (cells working together ORGAN (heart, brain, stomach …) ORGAN SYSTEMS (respiratory, circulatory …) ORGANISM copyright cmassengale

LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION Living Levels continued: 6. POPULATION (one species in an area) COMMUNITY (several populations in an area ECOSYSTEM (forest, prairie …) BIOME (Tundra, Tropical Rain forest…) BIOSPHERE (all living and nonliving things on Earth) copyright cmassengale

Number of Cells Although ALL living things are made of cells, organisms may be: Unicellular – composed of one cell Multicellular- composed of many cells that may organize into tissues, etc. copyright cmassengale

Cell Size and Types Cells, the basic units of organisms, can only be observed under microscope Two Basic types of cells include: Prokaryotic Cell Eukaryotic Cell copyright cmassengale

Eukaryotic Cell Cells contain a nucleus and other structures (organelles) enclosed within a membrane Prokaryotic Cell Eukaryotic Cell

Two Main Types of Eukaryotic Cells Animal Cell Plant Cell copyright cmassengale

Prokaryotes – Only 1 type Cells that lack a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles Includes bacteria Simplest type of cell Single, circular chromosome copyright cmassengale

What are viruses? Viruses are microscopic particles that attack healthy cells within living things. Viruses are structures that do not have cells and are not themselves a cell, but that do contain genetic information and use host cells of living organisms that they infect to reproduce.

Are Viruses Living or Non-living? Viruses are both and neither, They have some properties of life but not others 1) Viruses are not cells nor do they contain cells. 2) They do not have a cell membrane or other components of living cells. 3) Living host cells are required for their reproduction. 4) They do not take in food or energy or respond to stimuli. 5) They have genetic material surrounded by a shell and can therefore mutate and evolve. copyright cmassengale
