The requirement

The purpose of this requirement Notes for facilitators Discuss the importance of the participatory elements of CPD – reduced isolation, sharing new ideas etc.

How to meet the requirement Activity – 3 minutes Ask the group to give examples of what they think individual, and then participatory, CPD might be. If necessary clarify the difference. Notes for facilitators Emphasise that CPD does not have to be classroom learning and can take many varied forms. Highlight that the pilots demonstrated many nurses and midwives already exceed the 35 hours required.

What counts as CPD Notes for facilitators Define participatory learning – any learning activity in which you personally interact with other people. It is an activity undertaken with one or more professionals or in a larger group setting. This can include a virtual environment, such as an online discussion group, and can include interaction through social media. Highlight which of the above are specifically participatory learning and why. This type of CPD will also help to challenge professional isolation. This is not an exhaustive list and these examples do not have to be included. Reiterate that nurses and midwives are best placed to decide what CPD is best for them. This list can be found in How to revalidate with the NMC. Mandatory training such as health and safety and fire training does not count unless it is specifically relevant to your scope of practice. Nurses and midwives will be required as part of revalidation to reflect on CPD, feedback or an event or experience in their practice. Reiterate that nurses and midwives should begin to think about how their CPD links to the Code.

How to evidence your CPD Notes for facilitators Acceptable notes can be bullet points or more detailed explanation. As long as this meets the requirement. Remind participants that whatever format used it must be clearly evidenced to be easily understood by the Confirmer.

CPD template Notes for facilitators NMC template If you have your own format for recording CPD you may use this but ensure you cover all over the points in the previous slides.
