Standards and Objectives RI.6.2 Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. RI. 6.6. Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text. RI.6.7. Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue. Goal for today- Finish finding the author’s purpose of a speech and analyze the main idea of a speech. What types of thinking will be used today? With your partner, determine the types based on the standards and objectives. Remember the four types are research-based, creative, analytical, and practical. 9/20/2018 copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved.

copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved. Hi! Most of you probably already know me, but my name is Kristin and I’m running for student council. I’d like to tell you a few reasons why voting for me would be the best decision you make all year. First, I plan to ask Mr. Casteel to allow us to bring our laptops, ipods, and ipads into the classrooms to help enhance our learning. Secondly, if elected, I promise to finally convince the school board that we desperately need lockers here at NMS. Finally, electing me will ensure we get that salad bar in the cafeteria that we’ve been promised. As you can see, voting for me will make this year the best yet at North Middle School, so what are you waiting for? Get out there and vote for Kristin! 9/20/2018 copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved.

copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved. What is the purpose of Kristin’s speech? How can you tell? Who is her intended audience? How do you know? Which of the following would best enhance Kristin’s presentation and help to accomplish her purpose? Cool music and candy with “Vote for Kristin” The Star Spangled Banner and a picture of the American Flag 9/20/2018 copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved.

We have excellent scores on the TCAP each year because our students and teachers work very hard. North Stars also excel in athletics. Our sports teams play their hearts out in every game. In addition to academics and athletics, we also have many talented musicians in our band and chorus. We are so proud of all of the accomplishments of our North Middle Students. Thank you for allowing us to share our success with you at tonight’s meeting. 9/20/2018 copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved.

copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved. What is the purpose of this speech? How can you tell? Do you think the intended audience is most likely NMS students or School Board Members? Why? Which would best enhance the presentation? A video playing in the background of students participating in school activities. A pamphlet outlining what was discussed. 9/20/2018 copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved.

copyright 2006 www.brainybetty.com; All Rights Reserved. I am so excited that I was invited here today to share my stories with you. I hope that you enjoy these special stories. The first story I’m going to tell you is about an ant and a grasshopper. Listen carefully as I tell you about the important lesson that the grasshopper learned about planning and hard work.
