What is Hot? What is Cold?

Today’s Points: - Temperature is a measurement of the average energy of moving particles in a sold, liquid or gas. Heat is the thermal energy transferred from an area of higher temperature to an area of lower temperature. We use a thermometer to measure the temperature of solids, liquids or gas. Heat transfer can raise the temperature of a solid, liquid or gas.

To keep buildings and rooms warm and comfortable, we need to produce huge amounts of heat!

So… You are waiting for a bus on a cold day, so you try to keep warm by moving around.

The more you move the warmer you become.

You have an amazing and filling lunch.

How does this food keep you warm?

But it’s not enough energy to keep you warm.

So you decide to BUNDLE up!

“Waste” Heat Not all heat is produced on purpose. When you turn on a lamp, you put your hand close to the bulb you can feel that heat. The heat from the bulb is considered “waste” heat because we do not need it.

What is temperature actually measuring?

To understand temperature… Think about how matter is made up of particles. These particles are constantly moving. There is energy because of their motion.

But not all particles move at the same speed, some are faster than others.

Temperature: Is the measurement of the average energy of all particles in a solid, liquid or gas.

Thermal Energy: is the total energy of all the moving particles in a solid, liquid or gas. To Understand Heat: Temperature, Thermal Energy, Heat

Transferring Thermal Energy When we “heat” water, we mean that we are transferring energy to all the particles of water. This means we are increasing the total energy of the water particles. Motion of each particle increases, meaning temperature increases.

When you touch the cup with the hot tea, the cup has become hotter This means thermal energy has been transferred to the cup The amount of energy transferred to the cup Is called “heat”
