1984 Project Options Ms. Lowe’s E2H 2017

1984 Project Options You will select TWO of the project options to be completed. You must select one option from both categories. Category A Creative Project Category B Essay Essays are due no later than April 19, 2017 via TurnItIn.com. There will be no exceptions made. Projects are due no later than April 24, 2017. All students will present their projects on their assigned date and time.

Category A All projects will be presented to the class. Students will sign up for the presentations. Presentations should last 3-5 minutes. Category A is worth up to 100 points.

Category A cont. VISUAL REPRESENTATION DRAMATIC REPRESENTATION Pick a motif/theme from 1984 to create a visual representation of it. Your art must be multidimensional and represent at least three times your selected theme/motif appeared throughout the novel. You will also write an extended paragraph in which you analyze your artwork in comparison to the novel. You will need direct quotes to support your analysis. DRAMATIC REPRESENTATION You will create a 5-minute play in which you rewrite a key portion of the novel into a play/movie adaptation. This play script should create intense reactions from your audience. You will also write an extended paragraph in which you analyze how your script is similar and different to that of the novel. You will also explain how the dialogue/stage directions enhance the plot for film/stage.

Category A cont. NEWSPAPER ARTICLE POWERPOINT/PREZI Write a “Newspeak” article discussing a relevant political topic. You may either use a current political topic or you may create a plausible fictional topic. You must employ “Doublespeak” and also provide an “Oldspeak” version. Your “Newspeak” article must be at least 150 words (or 250 words in “Oldspeak). POWERPOINT/PREZI Create your own Utopia/Dystopia. You will create dual societies in which one is “perfect” and one is “broken”. You will create specific rules and organization for 10 different elements of culture (language, religion, geography, political structure, commerce, militia, family structure, education, food, and media). You will create a clear and colorful PowerPoint or Prezi that depicts your utopia/dystopia cultures.

Category B You will select one of the prompts to complete. Your essay must include specific textual references to support their analysis. All essays must be typed and submitted electronically through TurnItIn.com by the assigned due date. Essays in Category B are worth up to 100 points.

Category B cont. You may choose one of the following essay prompts: Write an essay in which you analyze how Winston Smith is classified as a tragic hero. Analyze how George Orwell utilizes literary devices (imagery, symbolism, tone, etc.) to create his dystopian society. Pick one character from the novel and analyze how they fit their archetypal profile. Be sure to establish the criteria for the archetype and explain any deviations the character has from the traditional model. Analyze the significance of one motif and how it is skillfully interwoven throughout the plot to add significance to the work as a whole.
