Training & Peak Performance Training Program- formalized physical preparation for involvement in a sport or physical activity

Strategies to Enhance Training Eat Nutritious Foods Hydration- Drink Plenty of Fluids Adequate Sleep (8 Hours Minimum) Avoid Harmful Substances (alcohol, tobacco, anabolic steroids & other drugs) Anabolic Steroids- synthetic substances similar to the male hormone testosterone

Chapter 4.5 Physical Activity Injuries Objectives: Analyze weather related risks associated with various physical activities Describe how to prevent and respond to minor injuries related to physical activity Assess physical activity injuries that require professional health services

Hot Weather Health Risks Overexertion- overworking the body leads to: Heat Exhaustion- overheating of the body resulting in cold clammy skin & shock Heat Cramps- muscle spasms that result from a loss of large amounts of salt & water through perspiration Heat Stroke- condition in which the body loses the ability to rid itself of excess heat through perspiration

Cold Weather Related Risks Frostbite- condition that results when body tissues become frozen Hypothermia- condition in which the body temperature becomes dangerously low

Weather Related Risks SUN EXPOSURE HEALTH RISKS Sunburn- burning of the outer skin layers Skin Cancer- cancer caused by prolonged unprotected exposure to the sun * Wear protective clothing & sun block to help prevent sun related health risks

Minor Injuries Muscle Cramp- spasm or sudden tightening of a muscle Strain- damaged to a muscle or tendon Sprain- damaged to a ligament * These minor injuries may be prevented by a proper warm up, cool down, & stretching

Treatment of Minor Injuries P.R.I.C.E. Protection Rest Ice Compression Elevation

Major Injuries (Seek Immediate Professional Medical Treatment) Fractures- break in a bone Dislocation- bone forced from normal position in a joint Tendonitis- tendons (fibrous bands that connect muscles to bones) become stretched or torn from overuse Concussion- results from trauma to the head, can cause swelling of the brain, may result in unconsciousness, neurological problems, dizziness, headaches, memory loss or death
