Churchill Dual Credit 2018-2019

What is Dual Credit Exactly? The Dual Credit Program at Churchill allows a student to enroll at San Antonio College (SAC) to earn college level credit while at the same time fulfilling high school academic requirements. Dual Credit classes at Churchill are full year courses. Students can take any dual credit class that they qualify for. Students can take 2 dual credit classes per year.

Why Do I want to be in Dual Credit? The Dual Credit courses will apply to most Associate Degrees at San Antonio College and may transfer to other colleges or universities. As with all transferring courses, it is up to the accepting college or university to honor dual credit course work. Review the FAQ section in the handbook for more specific details.

Why Do I want to be in Dual Credit? Earns you college credit Saves your parents $$$ Challenging course work prepares you for the rigor of college work!! Looks great on transcript when applying to college. (If you make good grades!!)

A common question asked is, “What is the difference between AP and Dual Credit?”

The Answer: AP Classes Dual Credit Classes AP classes require taking the AP exam in May; most colleges and universities award college credit if you score a 3 or better on the AP exam AP exam(s) costs money AP classes are open enrollment Once you pass the Dual Credit class, you will have a college transcript with grades to provide to the university that you attend Most colleges will accept the college transcript, but the colleges decide what credit that you will earn (For example, US History AP may be awarded a history elective credit instead of US History credit) Dual Credit costs nothing except the testing fee of the TSI exam Dual Credit classes require students to apply and qualify

For most Churchill Dual Credit classes, the AP students are learning the same material as the Dual Credit students!!

Considerations Before Taking Multiple DC Classes Some colleges may limit how many dual credit classes a student can enter with as a freshman applicant How dual credit grades and credits are posted is based on the way the college/university chooses to interpret the college transcript Just because you can take dual credit classes, may not mean you need to take them all…it really should be a thoughtful decision. Consider picking classes that could apply to your major. AP scores are universal and tend to be accepted everywhere…taking the AP exam is a great back up to a dual credit class

Current Dual Credit Classes English IV AP or English IV GT/AP (6 hours of college credit – 3 per semester) College Algebra (4 hours of college credit – 4 for the year) US History AP IPET/PET (Instructional Practice and Practicum) (3 hours of college credit – 3 for the year)

How are Dual Credit Classes Ranked? All of the Dual Credit classes that are AP receive the 1.29 multiplier for AP English IV AP US History AP Any Dual Credit classes that are not AP receive the 1.15 multiplier like a Pre-AP class College Algebra, IPET, PET

Applying for Dual Credit is a Process that takes Time and Effort First: Complete a college application through ApplyTexas Second: Complete online Test Preparation and then take the TSI test Third: Submit all your Dual Credit Forms

How Do I Qualify? You must have specific scores on the SAT, ACT, or the TSI test (most students use the TSI test to qualify) Math Reading SAT 530+ 480+ ACT 19+ Composite 23 TSI 350+ 351+ Essay/Writing 4/363

Something to Consider If you don’t earn qualifying scores the first time you test, you might consider waiting until next year to take a Dual Credit class. The test is a very strong indicator of whether a student is prepared to be successful with the college level material that will be presented in the class.

TSI Test Dates We will have three test dates: SATURDAY February 17, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. SATURDAY March 3, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. SATURDAY April 7, 2018 at 8:00 a.m.

Test Scores TSI Scores will be sent to SAC for you (students will receive a hard copy of their TSI scores that they need to keep) SAT/ACT Scores – Churchill will submit an official transcript with those scores to SAC

What will I need to Do? Once all deadlines are posted, please begin the process This process is long and takes time to complete each step There are significant time delays between some steps and students will not meet the deadlines if they procrastinate Thoroughly read all the information posted in the Apply Texas Handbook and Academic Dual Credit Handbook Deadlines are firm and set by Alamo Colleges and NEISD The Dual Credit Forms must be submitted by the deadline (the sooner the student submits the forms the sooner we can confirm their dual credit status)

Additional Items you Might Need: If you and/or your parent/guardian are: Active duty military or dependent:  Complete a Military Verification Form Resident Alien:  Provide a copy of the front and back of the Resident Alien card Not a U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien:  Provide a copy of the front and back of your residency documentation

What Grade do I need to Maintain? SAC: You will earn credit as long as you maintain a 70 in the class (SAC grades are posted as A, B, C, or F not numerical) To earn Performance Acknowledgements under the Distinguished Level of Achievement on the Foundation Plan, students must earn 12 hours of DC with an 80 or better to be posted on the transcript

How Does the College Credit get Transferred? First: Student will request a final high school transcript be sent to SAC in May Second: Students will log into their ACES account in June and request a SAC final transcript be sent to their university Last: Check with your university during July/August to verify that they have gotten the SAC college transcript

What is ACES? ACES is your SAC account that maintains your grades and courses Just like you log into your student portal, you should log into your ACES account numerous times a semester You will be required to log into your ACES account to complete your Test Preparation modules before TSI testing You will be asked to log into your ACES account in August to check that you are registered for the correct Dual Credit classes you want to take You can check your ACES account to see your midterm and final grades

Place your screenshot here There will be specific instructions in the Johnson Electronic Handbook that explain how to log into ACES

What is a BANNER ID number? Your Banner ID # is your student ID number for SAC This number is confirmation that your college application to SAC has been received and processed You will need this number to register for your TSI test You will need this number to submit on all of your Dual Credit forms

Critical Information about Dual Credit: Students need to understand that once in a Dual Credit class you are beginning a permanent College Transcript. Thus, you want to maintain good grades and should try to make a B or better in your Dual Credit class. Please be aware of the withdrawal deadlines each semester. Failure to meet the deadlines could result in an F or a W on your college transcript. Students are limited on the number of W’s they can have while in college.

Current Dual Credit Students If you have qualifying scores for the courses you want to take in your senior year: You will only need to submit the Dual Credit Checklist, and Alamo Colleges Dual Credit Consent (pp. 5-8) Form You will NOT have to retest OR reapply!! If you do not currently have the qualifying scores for a certain class, you will have to take the TSI to re-qualify or use SAT/ACT scores. If you only took College Algebra this year, you will need to completely start over again as a new student.

Required Dual Credit Forms The following forms must be submitted in March: Dual Credit Checklist (Step 5) Alamo Colleges Dual Credit Consent Form (Step 5) Any additional forms (resident alien card or military verification form) that might be needed will also have to be turned in to the Counseling Office
