UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS

What is representation? House of Representatives What determines how many representatives each state gets? Why?

What is underrepresentation? If they were to elect a leader, which race would most likely represent the population?

If this is a classroom…. If they elected a leader, what gender would represent the population best? There is accurate representation if… A female would be elected 80% of the time. There is underrepresentation if… A male would be elected a little more than 20% of the time.

Underrepresented Groups Copy Definition: Underrepresented Group: group of people who do not have the same influence, importance or power as other members in a society.

Underrepresented Groups What are some underrepresented groups in the world? Minorities Women People with disabilities Religious minorities Natives

How are women underrepresented? How have they been underrepresented throughout history?  Not allowed to vote or work, not educated, not allowed to lead in governments

How are women underrepresented? What about today…? In the US, despite being 51% of the total population… There have only been 44 female senators ever (currently 20) There have only been 300 female representatives There have only been 4 female supreme court justices out of 112 And there has never been a female President of the United States

Reflection Let’s think about it… if slightly more than half of the world’s population is made up of females (and it is), then shouldn’t slightly more than half of the world’s leaders be females at any given point in time?
