(ii) A chemical reaction may NOT involve the gain or loss of atoms as it takes place. Chemical reactions are rearrangements of the atoms (but are not gained or lost). (iii) All atoms of a given element are NOT the same. Atoms differ due to isotopes and ions. (iv) NO CORRECTIONS

Fall 2014 Exam Cont’d 16. a) The diver sinks because the gases inside the diver are compressible so water can rush into the tube. This increases the mass of the diver and thus the density, causing the diver to sink when squeezed. 16. b) Glassware #1 should be used because the last digit is uncertain and is measured in between the graduation lines. For glassware #2, the volume should be 32 mL (last digit can vary). For glassware #3, the volume should be 32.73 mL (last digit can vary). 17. b) KMT incorporation: Because the particles have kinetic energy and are in constant motion, adding more particles (moles of gas) will cause more collisions and thus a momentary increase in pressure on the balloon. The balloon will expand in volume to equalize with atmospheric pressure and keep pressure essentially constant. 17. c) KMT incorporation: Because the particles have kinetic energy and are in constant motion, adding more particles (moles of gas) will cause more collisions and thus an increase in pressure on the container. Since the container is rigid and cannot expand, the volume remains constant while the pressure increases.
