class criteria for just war Attacking your homeland Losing war that needs assistance for victory Big attack Innocent lives are being lost if nothing is done Peace treaties have been tried but did not work The government/person in charge must make the decision There must be a good plan for victory Diplomacy/alternatives, Lives, damage, success?

Catholic Church’s Just War Criteria Must be decided by the people in charge.

2. The damage being inflicted by the aggressor is grave, lasting, and certain. 3. All other options have been explored. 4. War as defensive measure must have serious prospect of success.

5. It cannot produce more or greater evil. 6. There is a duty to protect and help innocent victims. Helpers must never try to influence who they are helping. 7. There is a moral obligation to intervene when basic human rights are being seriously violated.

8. Economic sanctions must be used carefully and not to punish 8. Economic sanctions must be used carefully and not to punish. It cannot just affect everyone (indiscriminate). The purpose has to be clear and obtainable. You cannot harm their economy so that everyone suffers. (ex: food, money, electricity, water, etc)

How does the American Revolution measure up to the class criteria? Facts about the causes of the American Revolution: British treated Am. colonists badly (many taxes; taxation without representation) Boston Tea Party (when Am. merchants dumped cheap British tea into the harbor because it hurt their business) led to the Intolerable Acts (Britain closed trade for Boston, forced them to house soldiers, charged them more taxes and limited their economy) The Am. tried to boycott and make peace before declaring their independence/war Leaders of the Am. Revolution were mostly rich and well educated merchants and landowners Only about 40-30% of American colonists wanted to break away from Britain. The rest did not want to break away or did not care. Many people moved to British-controlled Canada after America broke off from Britain.
