Presentation transcript:

Tuesday September 20, 2016 Do Now Quick Write: Identify an influential person in your life. Explain the qualities you most admire in that person. Why do you admire those qualities? What qualities do you admire about yourself?

Learning Target Success Criteria I can define “mission statement” and explain why mission statements are useful. I can use brainstorming activities to consider who I want to be, why I want to be that person, and how I will become that person. What is a mission statement & why are they useful? How do I create a mission statement?

Key Terms Mission Statement: a statement that describes who a person or company is and why they do the work they do. (WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE?) Introspection: Examining your own thoughts, impressions, & feelings; the act of looking within one’s self.

Company Mission Statements A mission statement helps guide a company by defining who they are and why they do what they do. It describes their PURPOSE. Coca-Cola: “To refresh the world. To inspire moments of optimism and happiness. To create value and make a difference.” Google: “To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Personal Mission Statements Writing a personal mission statement takes introspection (examining your own thoughts, impressions, & feelings) to help you think about the person you are & the person you want to become. WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE?

Who am I? Imagine a random person types your name into , what words would you want your name associated with? Hard worker? - Athlete? College Bound? - Visionary? World’s Greatest Student? -Problem Solver? Student Leader? - Inventor (These are just examples. Be creative!) On a piece of paper, write down 3 descriptions that you want to show up in a google search of you(i.e. what makes you the person you are). Adapted from http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevecooper/2013/05/17/whats-your-personal-mission-statement/

But why? Now you must consider WHY you want to be the person you just described. What is your motivation? Examples Choose 2 of your 3 characteristics and write down why you want to be considered that way (what motivates you to want to be that person?) Characteristic Why? The greatest problem solver ever Solving problems allows me to be able to help other people and make the world a better place. Astronomer I want to explore space and solve problems of the universe.

What are you willing to do? How? Now that you’ve considered your motivation for becoming that person, how will you become that person? What are you willing to do? Choose 1 of the 2 you wrote a “why” statement for and write down what you are willing to do to become that person.

Reflection A personal mission statement answers questions like these: What do I want from my life? What do I value? What are my talents? At the end of my life, what do I want to have accomplished? Choose 2 of the previous questions to reflect upon and answer.

Wednesday September 21, 2016 Do Now A personal mission statement is the beginning of personal leadership. It sets guidelines for life. By referring to it and internalizing its meaning, we make choices that serve values and reject the things that oppose them. Quick Write: Describe a time where you made a choice that represented your values and a time where you rejected something that opposed your values.

Learning Target Success Criteria What is my mission? I can create my own mission statement and explain how I will use my mission to help me be successful.

Mission Statement Review A personal mission statement describes who a person is and why they do the work they do. It describes your purpose and can be used to keep you on track and focused to achieve that purpose. Yesterday, you brainstormed to create: 3 descriptions of the person you want to be 2 explanations of why you want to be that person (your motivation) 1 explanation of what you are willing to do to become that person. Today, after looking at a few examples of personal mission statements, you will create your own mission statement.

Example 1 Oprah’s Mission “To be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students to be more than they thought they could be.” In an issue of O magazine, Winfrey recalls watching her grandmother churn butter and wash clothes in a cast-iron pot in the yard. A small voice inside of her told her that her life would be more than hanging clothes on a line. She eventually realized she wanted to be a teacher, but “I never imagined it would be on TV,” she writes. Founder of OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network personal-mission-statements-of-5-famous-ceos-and-why-you-should-write-one-too

Example 2 Richard Branson “To have fun in [my] journey through life and learn from [my] mistakes.” Branson shared his personal mission statement in an interview with Motivated magazine. He added, “…know how to be a good leader and always try to bring out the best in people. It’s very simple: listen to them, trust in them, believe in them, respect them, and let them have a go!” Founder of The Virgin Group

Example 3 Amanda Steinberg “To use my gifts of intelligence, charisma, and serial optimism to cultivate the self-worth and net-worth of women around the world.” Steinberg launched DailyWorth.com in 2009 to help women build wealth. Since then, she’s grown her site to more than 1 million subscribers. “I believe financially empowered women are the key to world peace,” she says. Founder of Dailyworth.com

Write your mission statement We’ve looked at mission statement examples from people and companies. These statements are unique to those people, describing who they want to be, why they want to be that person or company, and what they want to do to achieve that goal. On a blank piece of paper, create a first draft of your mission statement that describes your purpose: who you want to be, the work you want to do, and why you want to do it.
