Bathroom Passes You must keep this sheet in your binder. 3 per semester (now until December) Never use passes during lecture

Objectives SWBAT explain at least one way college can improve their future. SWBAT define success in their own words. SWBAT take a diagnostic test using correct testing procedures in order to understand their current understanding of Biology content.

EOCT Recap What percentage of your grade does the EOCT account for? What percentage must a student get to receive “meets expectations” on the EOCT? What percentage must a student get to receive “exceeds expectations” on the EOCT?

Biology EOCT Trend Data 2010 2011 2012 FPHS 37.3% 41.8% 47.5% District 41.6% 46.9% 52% Last year, Ms. Nay’s classes had a 58% pass rate.

Answer the following question in a complete sentence in your notes (2 min): How does Forest Park’s pass rate compare to the district of Clayton County? How do you think this compares to the rest of the state, the country, and the world?

After looking at the data… I don’t think a 47.5% passing rate is good enough, and I know you all are smart enough to do better. With enough hard work, I want you all to be able to pass the EOCT, pass this class, graduate, and go on to greater things. What is the problem with me slacking off and taking the class again? **Its not going to be in class again.

WHY GRADUATE? WHY GO TO COLLEGE? I really care about you Yeah I only have you for this year, but I want to make sure that you don’t just reach a passing rate for my class I want you to leave with a plan to get you here. I cannot monitor your progress from now until you are an adult, you must be independent and OWN YOUR LEARNING

The Facts: People without a high school diploma make $451 per week. People with a bachelor’s degree make $1,053 per week

Be Successful! Being successful requires HARD WORK! Being successful requires a PLAN! VIDEO: Listen and pick out your favorite quote.

Video Reflection 1. How do you define ‘success’? How will you know if you have been ‘successful’ in life? What is the video’s message? (There are several! Don’t worry about being right or wrong) 3. How can this video’s message be applied in our classroom?

Steps to Achievement Project Goal: Create a “Steps to Achievement” Poster showing the steps you are going to take to reach your BIG GOALS WHY?? To understand, believe, and see how you will EXCEL, GRADUATE, and ACHIEVE ALL THAT YOU WANT IN LIFE Anyone can say that they want to do great things. NO one enters high school saying that they do not want to be successful When you get discouraged you lose sight of what

Steps to Achievement Ms. Nay Period 3 August 14, 2013 -Become neurosurgeon and save lives -Work to improve science education and help students graduate and achieve their goals across the nation. Ms. Nay Period 3 August 14, 2013 -Graduate from medical school -Graduate from Saint Louis University with a degree in Biology -Enroll in all AP or Honors Classes -Achieve all A’s at FPHS -Exceed on the EOCT or GHSGT

What is your Ultimate Goal? Reflect on your paper in full sentences: 1. What do you like to do? 2. What are you good at? 3. What do you see yourself doing in 15 years? Why? This reflection will help us figure out what the best future option is for YOU! This is a learning process and we will work together to make sure you have all the resources necessary to achieve your goals! 

Closing Major takeaways: To be successful you must have a plan We will be creating a Steps to Achievement plan Graduating high school and going to college opens many doors financially and in the working world. The first step to achieving our goals is passing this class and the EOCT HOW WILL WE KNOW WHEN WE ARE SUCCESSFUL??

Diagnostic What is the root word in diagnostic? What does this root word mean?

Diagnostic We must first see where we stand in our Biology content knowledge before we can measure our growth

Test Taking Norms Silent Stay in seat Raise your hand to ask a question Cover your work Eyes on your own paper Remain silent even when you are finished

When you are finished… Bring test to my desk and let me assign you a book Pick up a colored piece of paper for scientific method foldable Fold “hot dog” style Cut 6 flaps Label in the following order Ask a question Form a hypothesis Create an experiment Collect the data Analyze the data Report conclusions Look in your book for the definitions of each step of the scientific method!
