Student Tardiness Around 15% of the student population is habitually tardy to school daily About 65% of students arrive late to school each week Only around 4% of the student population has perfect attendance *Data gathered from 2015-2016 attendance records

School Improvement Plan: Establish a comprehensive plan to decrease student tardiness to school with varied incentives and consequences through a tiered system based on total tardiness accumulated and total engagement during Homeroom Activities. (Eligibility based on number of tardy days accumulated, duration of school missed due to tardiness or number of days accumulated for exceptional attendance and Plicker participation). Students will interact with Plickers to display presence during Homeroom class Incorporating technology into the announcements will encourage student participation and attendance for rewards.

Objectives of this session Participants will learn how to use technology such as Plickers to allow their students to show knowledge and presence in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own classes and questions for student engagement

Why do we need plickers? Our proposed School Improvement Plan is to decrease the tardiness in schools by incorporating fun, technology-enhanced, activities into Homeroom time. Students will show presence by engaging in academic and interest-based questions using Plickers. Questions will be teacher and student generated to increase school engagement and interaction. Incentives will be awarded for student participation and mastery.

Plickers! Any Questions?

How will this work for us? Students will pick up their QR code from their homeroom teacher upon entering school (on time). During the morning announcements, the question of the day will pop up. Questions can include any subject/content from sports, to health questions, to math and reading, etc. Students’ answers will be scanned by the homeroom teacher. Tokens can be awarded for students who get the answer correct. Students can win extra tokens for creating their own questions to be on the announcements with a shout-out for creating it.

How will this work for us? Each teacher is responsible for scanning their students’ responses for the day and passing out tokens to those who answered correctly. Teachers will be encouraged to have students take turns scanning the classroom for student responses, etc. In addition to the Plickers, the students can write their answers on a piece of paper and at the end of each week, the answers can be collected on Fridays with the attendance folder, and on Monday, the students who get the entire week correct, can go in a drawing for a prize (free pencils, $1.00 voucher for the café, etc.)
