The Tests At the end of Year 2, children will take assessments in: Reading Maths The Tests

The results of the test will be looked at alongside the work that the children have done in class on a day to day basis in order for the teacher to make an overall assessment. The teacher will assess your child in reading, writing and maths as either; Working below expected standard for Year 2 Working at expected standard for Year 2 Working at greater depth for Year 2. MATHS

The Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise of two papers: Paper 1: arithmetic, Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, There will be a variety of question types: multiple choice, matching, true/false, constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method). Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines). We are teaching them to use mental methods and pictures to help them solve the sorts of problems that they may encounter in the test. WHAT ARE THE TESTS LIKE?

READING The Reading Test consists of two separate papers: Paper 1 – Contains a selection of texts with questions about the text. Paper 2 – Contains a reading booklet of a selection of passages. Children will write their answers to questions about the passage in a separate booklet. Each paper is worth 50% of the marks The texts will cover a range of poetry, fiction and non- fiction. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation. READING

WHEN WILL THE TESTS TAKE PLACE? The tests will be spread out and will take place at some point during May, but our intention is never to make the children feel anxious or nervous about the tests. There will be 4 tests to complete: Maths Paper 1 –arithmetic Maths Paper 2 –Reasoning Reading Paper 1 –400 and 700 * Reading Paper 2 –800 to 1100 words WHEN WILL THE TESTS TAKE PLACE?

HOW WILL WRITING BE ASSESSED?

What we’ll be doing… The Year 2 pupils will sit their tests in May. Between then and now we will be helping them get used to the format and conditions of the tests. We will be arranging for pupils to sit the tests in the conditions they will find most helpful. We will continue to teach a range of subjects, not just ‘test prep’! What we’ll be doing…

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME Enjoy reading regularly together at home. Discuss what they have read, ask your child questions which requires them to find the answer in the text and to use clues from the pictures and the text (infer. Discuss and practise the common exception words that are coming home as handwriting practise each week. Quick fire mental calculations (what is ? +?, double 5, half of 20, 5x3). Completing homework-it supports the learning done in class. HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME

What You can do to help! Don’t place lots of pressure on your child! It’s not about having to pass, but rather more about showing off what they can do! Make sure their attendance and punctuality are as good as possible What You can do to help!
