In the summer term of 2018, children in Year 6 will sit the following SATs papers: Reading Maths (3 papers – arithmetic and two reasoning papers) Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar These tests will be both set and marked externally. Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment.

Key Stage 2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test (total 70 marks) The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts - Paper 1: Questions requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and Paper 2: Spelling test of 20 words, consisting of a transcript read by the test administrator, lasting around 15 minutes. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions: Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’ Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

Key Stage 2 Reading (total 50 marks) The English reading test focuses on the comprehension elements of the national curriculum and includes a mixture of text genres. The test is designed so that the texts increase in their level of difficulty. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test . There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’ (Usually worth 3 marks)

Key Stage 2 Maths (total 110 marks) Children will sit three papers in Maths: Paper 1: Arithmetic, 30 minutes Papers 2 and 3: Reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Paper 1 will cover calculations involving all 4 operations, including calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages. It also covers long division and long multiplication. (Paper worth 40 marks) Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types testing mathematical fluency, solving mathematical problems (reasoning). (Each paper worth 35 marks). The question types include: Multiple choice True or false Questions giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart Questions where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem. Questions where they have to prove their hypothesis.

When will KS2 SATs take place in 2018? The Year 6 KS2 SATs will be administered in the week commencing 14th May 2018.

Scaled scores are used to report national curriculum test outcomes. Scaled scores help test results to be reported consistently from one year to the next. National curriculum tests are designed to be as similar as possible in terms of challenge year on year, but slight differences in difficulty will occur between years. Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that 2 pupils achieving the same scaled score in different years will have demonstrated the same attainment. A pupil’s scaled score is based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answer correctly. The pupil’s raw score is translated into a scaled score using a conversion table. For the KS2 tests a scaled score of 100 represents the ‘expected standard’. A scaled score of 110 represents working at greater depth.

Writing This is assessed at school by the teachers in the department. It is moderated in-house by all Year 6 teachers and also by other Year 6 teachers from local primary schools. Local authorities are responsible for organising external moderation visits for key stage 2 writing by their own moderators.

Revision This will start in mid-March. Each child will remain with their class teacher and appropriate resources will be selected to support them. We have revision books for the children, for SPAG and maths. You can either purchase these for your child or your child can borrow one from us. Homework We will be sending a revision timetable out with the children before revision starts. Revision homework lasts for approximately an hour each evening.

Thank you! Questions...
