Class 4: Project Guidelines Project A – Creating an Advertisement
An Adventure of Your Lifetime An advertisement is a presentation or visual display that lets others know about something. An advertisement may also try to convince people to do something. We see and hear advertisements everywhere: on television, on the radio, in magazines, on billboards, and on bulletin boards. Advertisements are used to encourage people to buy products, see a movie, donate time, give money, or to tell people more about a problem.
You will create the following: An advertisement poster to persuade people to visit a certain extreme tourism destination - your poster must include: where you find the activities (the destination or the name of the country) a description of two or three extreme tourism activities reasons why tourists should try these activities a picture of each activity (a photograph or drawing) contact information for people who want to plan their trip
You will complete three steps: Choose one of the destinations from the article “Going to Extremes.” Select a target audience — people who would be interested in these types of extreme tourism. Consider each activity and how you will persuade people to visit. Complete a rough draft with all the information that you need for your poster. Create a final advertisement to persuade extreme tourists to visit the destination. NOTE: If you do not wish to choose a destination from the article “Going to Extremes,” you may do additional research on other extreme tourism locations. Refer to the PBL website for extra information.
Step 1: Select the destination. Choose your favorite location from the article “Going to Extremes.” Answer the questions about your chosen location on pg. 25 in your textbook. Destination What or where is your recommended extreme tourism destination? What is unique, or special, about this destination? What exciting words describe this destination? What is the main reason for someone to visit this extreme tourism spot?
Step 1: Select the destination. If you have chosen a destination, it’s time to be more specific and think about the activities that you want to promote. Write down two activities and answer the questions on pg. 26 in your textbook. NOTE: A catchphrase is a short phrase or sentence that sums up an experience in a fun way. For example, a catchphrase for driving military tanks could be, “You’ve always wanted to be a soldier, and now you can!”
Step 2: Make a rough draft. Use the template on pg. 27 to make a rough draft of your poster. Look at the exciting words that you wrote down for each activity in the first step. These words should be used in your presentation to make the destination and activities sound exciting and interesting. Find the “unique or different” details that you wrote for each activity in the first step. These details can be turned into reasons to visit the destination and do this activity.
Step 3: Put it all together. With all the information that you have gathered, create a poster to advertise the extreme tourism location and activities to your classmates. Present your information on a big piece of poster board. An advertisement should grab the attention of your audience. It should include information to help the audience learn more about the location. Turn to pg. 28 in your textbook to see an example of how you might organize your poster. Of course, as long as you include the necessary parts, you can organize the poster however you like.
Presentation Tips Clearly introduce your tourism destination and the extreme activities that people can do there. Point to each activity picture while presenting your activities. Your advertisement should encourage people to come try the extreme activities. Be energetic and try to make them sound as exciting as possible.
Class 4: Project Guidelines Project B – Writing a Persuasive Letter
The Next Space Tourist Sometimes when people want to make a difference, they write persuasive letters. When you write a persuasive letter, you are trying to convince the reader to do something. For example, someone might write a letter to a clothing store to convince them not to sell fur.
The Next Space Tourist Think back to the article “Up and Beyond.” Astronauts go to space all the time, but it is very difficult for ordinary people to travel to space. This is because space travel is expensive and hard for an ordinary person. People who are not astronauts spend a lot of money and time getting physical training before they fly into space. Imagine that you are a person who wishes to travel to space. However, you do not have enough money to pay for the trip, so you are writing a letter to convince the person in charge to let you be a space tourist.
You will create the following: A persuasive letter explaining why you should be the next space tourist - your letter should include these things: why you want to travel to space what you want to see and do in space why you would be a good space tourist Pictures that show the reasons why you would be a good space tourist
You will complete three steps: Brainstorm different reasons why you should be the next space tourist. Think about how you can support these reasons with pictures. Write a rough draft of a letter using a word box and template, and then decide what photos or drawings to use. Write the final draft of your letter, and organize your pictures for a presentation. NOTE: If you wish to add more to your presentation than is outlined in the steps above, you are more than welcome to do so. For example, you can dress up or create props for your presentation.
Step 1: Explain why you would be a good space tourist. First, let’s consider the things that you are good at or traits that potentially make you a great space tourist. Complete the chart on pg. 31 by filling in traits and explaining why those traits make you a good space tourist. Here is an example: Trait or Ability Examples that show my trait or ability Pictures or Drawings I’m fearless. I’m not afraid of heights. a drawing of me standing on top of a high cliff
Step 2: Write a rough draft. Include the following in your letter: why you want to travel to space what you want to see or do in space why you would be a good space tourist Your letter should be at least three paragraphs, one for each of the points listed above. You may use the words from the word box on pg. 32 to help add details to your letter. Soyuz capsule antigravity experiment International Space Station atmosphere orbit fantasy astronaut scientific solar system capture extraordinary galaxy eclipse universe extraterrestrial
Step 3: Complete your letter with pictures or illustrations. Now it is time to write the final letter. Use the template on pg. 34 to draft the final version of your letter, which you will read in front of the class. Make sure you have pictures to go with each of the reasons listed in your letter.
Presentation Tips When you read your letter, be sure to speak loudly and clearly. Your letter is full of reasons explaining why you would be a great space tourist. For each of these reasons, you should have a picture to support it. When you read your letter aloud, show your class the picture that goes with each reason. This will help prove that you really will be a good space tourist - for example, if you say, “I would be a great space tourist because I am fearless and will try anything once,” you can then hold up a picture of you being fearless.
