Geography - Definition The study of place, space and environment and how humans interact with the world around them. Two different ‘arms’ of geography: Physical: The study of the natural systems that govern the Earth Human: Interactions between natural systems and humans

Physical vs. Human Physical Human

Physical or Human? Studying landforms/topography (shape of Earth’s surface) Looking at the development of cities Examining rock types Understanding why tourists come to Australia Looking at the spread of internet connectivity around the world The study of earthquakes and volcanos Understanding forest types Examining changes to the beaches in Torquay

Human Geography and Urbanization Urban Area (a city): An area that is densely populated by humans and there is no agricultural employment. Write down the first words that come to your mind when you think of cities. List at least 10.

Other Key Terms Rural An area of very low population density and land use is dominated by agriculture or wilderness. Suburban An area that is heavily populated by humans. Usually found on the outer rings of the cities and defined by single-family homes. Population Density Average # of people per square kilometer. Math equation would be: # of people/# of square km Rural Suburban

Unit 1 Focus: URBANIZATION The movement of people into cities.

Why move? Push and Pull Factors. Pull Factors: Reasons that people move to an area Push Factors : Reasons that people leave an area

Your Prep List at least 5 pull factors bringing people to move to the city. List at least 5 push factors causing people to leave the city.
