Español 1 17-18 de febrero Thanks for taking my classes. This powerpoint is for 1st and 2nd periods. You have 3rd period free. Take a minute to click through this presentation to see how it goes. It is very important to get through all the slides as the last one is their homework for today; keep your eye on the clock! Don’t let the students use the hall pass without a voucher given to you first (and, if you speak Spanish, they need to ask in Spanish to go) Don’t lend pencils and pens from my desk. I have a TA 8th period, he will have a book to read or homework to do. You may have him help you out if you need to – otherwise, see if Mrs. Bruckman nextdoor can use his help. If you have questions, please call me at 801-390-3125. You may tell my students that I am sick today but I hope to be better by tomorrow and that I miss being there with them! Miss Turneau

LA PARTICIPACION #1 This is the warm-up for the class. While they are writing their answers you can take roll. I’m sorry that I have my seating charts at home with me – you will have to call roll from the list the office gives you. The students are answering these 3 questions: What is your mom’s name? What is your family’s home like? Where does your grandfather live? After all have finished writing their answers, have them practice asking and answering them with their partner across the table. If you speak Spanish, you can call on several of them for each question by first asking their name (in Spanish) and then asking them the question. I try to converse with 10 – 12 students during this activity. For participation #1, tell them to draw a “muchacha”

¿Qué tal la tarea? Pasa la tarea a la izquierda. LA PARTICIPACION #2 Summarize the video Write a summary, in English, of what you learned about Costa Rica. Make it a quality paragraph of 7-9 sentences. Pasa la tarea a la izquierda. Busca la idea principal Marca la idea principal Devuelva la tarea Be sure that ALL students copy down the homework instructions. Participation #5 = have them draw “un corazón” (a heart)

Costa Rica While you watch this video, take notes, here are ideas: Write down interesting facts you learn Write down information about any holidays, food, and traditions you learn Write down descriptions of fascinating locations in the country Consider that you are “close reading” the video and write down your thoughts or feelings along with questions you have as you watch LA PARTICIPACION #3 Show the video for the remainder of the class period. You will probably not finish it today – note where you stop in each class. Have them take notes in their “diario” section of their notebooks. Watch the clock and stop the video when you have 5-7 minutes left. Participation #4 = have them draw something from the video

Los Apuntes -La Familia- LA PARTICIPACION #4 El hermano mayor = older brother El hermano menor = younger brother Mi / mis = my Tu / tus = your Su / sus = his/her/their La mascota = pet El perro = dog El gato = cat El pez = fish Nosotros somos = we are Ellos / Ellas son = they are Have the students copy down all the notes in their note section. Don’t let them take more than 5 minutes!!! Participation #2 – have them draw “el abuelo”

El diario -En mi familia- Write about one of your family members in Spanish. Include things like appearance, age, interests, hometown, etc. Write continuously for 5 minutes - no stopping! - no talking! - no worrying about spelling or punctuation! LA PARTICIPACION #3 Remind them to date their entry and title it “En mi familia.” Allow them 5 minutes to complete this writing assignment – set a timer. Afterwards, have them count up their Spanish words and write the amount below the paragraph Participation #3 = have them draw “la familia”

World Language Week is coming! Your poster is due Feb. 20 It is worth 50 points! This week is the first week of March – a national recognition of students who study a language other than their native language. If anyone has been absent; the details for this assignment are: The poster cannot be larger or smaller than ½ poster board size. It needs to advertise, like a highway billboard, why someone should study a foreign language – any foreign language The final product is due Feb 20 but the design must be approved in class next time in order to be eligible for turn in. Next class time they only need to have the design drawn up on their homework paper.
